Default 2000 XJ8 Programming of Ignition Key

Have two keys one works fine, the other not so much. Trunk button works most often, unlock works occasionally, unlock and headlight button not at all.

Put in new batteries and differing instructions on youtube are confusing me. One says to flick high beams multiple times, other says to turn key back and forth multiple times. Anyone know correct procedure to program key?

Please help, thanks

The reprogramming may not be the solution as some buttons work meaning it still has the programme. Open it up, remove the rubber sheet and clean the touch pads that make contact with the circuit board as well as the sensing points on the circuit board. If no buttons work after cleaning, it will be because the remote has lost its setting due to a longer period without the battery, in which case you will have to reprogrammme it.

+1 on a good clean, I've used alcohol and Q tips, flood the PCB and buttons and watch as the crud runs out.

Programming is via the headlights and button clicks, the led in the gear selector surround acknowledges the button push. Press the buttons you know worked before the clean and batteries, once paired you can then test all the buttons.

Default Almost there

Thank you for responses.

I cleaned contacts and can program either remote successfully.

However each time I make one of the remotes "work", the other, then does not. Must one remote be far away while the other is being programmed?

This is the full procedure:

"Remove the key from one of the fobs. Sit in car with all remotes. Hold headlight flasher back and at the same time turn ignition key to position 1. Flash headlights 4 times - this puts the alarm into programme mode. Listen for a beep from the alarm and look to check the led by the J gate is flashing. Programme each transmitter by pressing the lock or unlock button once. The alarm will beep each time you press a button if the transmitter is working.

You must hear a total of 5 beeps to complete the programming - so if you have one transmitter press the unlock or lock button five times, with two press the button on one 3 times and on the other twice and so on."

Thanks that did it. I was doing the whole process for each remote rather than simply pressing buttons on each remote on the final step
