Default Valet key programming and key cutting

Hey Everyone,

My normal key finally failed (the unlock button doesn't work anymore) so I ordered a new one. I have a valet key that i'm using right now until I can get the new one and get it cut but I was thinking about how I reprogram the valet key when I go to program the new key into the system. I searched around the forum and found a few threads on programming a regular flip key but I couldn't find anything about programming the valet key, does anyone know what the procedure is on how to do that ? Also, does anyone know how much the dealer usually charges to just cut a new key and not program it? and are they any alternatives to going to the dealer to get the key cut?

Thanks for the help,

Mat

You can get a new remote and use the same key. Might save you some money. I bought one on Ebay for about 17 bucks and used the guts on my old one to refresh the buttons.

I got remote from eBay, the new key was about $37, cutting was $10, programming the key in the PATS $110.

Your key has two parts, the remote and the actual metal key. Both can be ordered and programmed separately. If your button does not work, looks like you can use Drew's advice and just get a new remote - you can program it yourself.

Thank you all for your help,

I ended up finding the extra key to my brothers old 04 X-Type and transplanted the guts into my key and reprogrammed it and it worked just fine. Unfortunately I did order a whole new key but fortunately the seller is allowing me to return it for a full refund so no harm no foul!

How do you program the valet key? Does a dealer have to do that?
