Default What are the plastic cylinders under the airbox?

I'm fixing stuff on my new '98 XJ8 and there appears to be a broken T-fitting in what looks like a vacuum line going to two little plastic cylinders under the airfilter box.

I'm going to to run to the autoparts store for a replacement T-fitting, but what am I fixing?

In don't recall vacuum lines under the air box, unless, maybe, you have power washers for your headlights?

Reserve vacuum tanks (for cruise control?). Attached pic is for S/C engines but you get the idea.

I think these went away with the AJ27 engines.

Hi Ungn,

I like Eric's theory about the headlamp washers, or possibly components of the windshield washer system. You can review diagrams like the one below at jaguarclassicparts.com. Perhaps that will help you identify your part:

Cheers,

Don

That looks like them. It also looks like what ever needed them wasn't getting them AND I had a vacuum leak.

With a new T, at least they are hooked up, now, whatever they do.

IIRC they are for the AC system. For the times when your engine doesn't make any vacume (full throttle). Kind of like a vacume buffer...

AJ-26 engines used a vacuum line to the throttle body to operate the cruise control. Those are the vacuum reservoir tanks to ensure proper operation of the cruise control. The AJ-27 throttle bodies did away with the vacuum control for the cruise control, so no more need for those reservoirs.

I'm finding vacuum leaks all over the motor. The Texas heat for 20 years was not kind to the plastic Jaguar chose.

I'm going to have to rig up a Tom Cruise Mission Impossible suspension harness so I can work over the motor without touching anything that might break off in my fingers.

Its obvious my XK8 came from a cooler part of the country than my XJ8 did.
