Air filter hose
1986 XJ6 4.2L coming out of storage (17 yrs).
Noticed hose near back of air filter that goes forward and up to metal pipe that in turn goes across top front of engine,,,hose is "torn" beneath screw clamp. How do I identify damaged hose and find part #, source, etc? I've very limited mechanical knowledge and I'm not adept in finding my way around various forums here.
I've had new brakes and shocks installed as well as new battery. Was told I need new alternator. Volt meter on dash reads hair above 13V. Is there another way of checking alternator? Car is starting/running fine. Any help would be great...thanks

Is it the expansion hose with the expansion ribbing ?
Alternator light along with reading about 13.5 - 14.5 DC volts on the large B + post on the alternator while running as you put a separate meter on it . The instrument gauge is to be disregarded in this test .
Any auto parts store will test this alternator along with a suspect new battery for free for a second opinion .
You can remove the alternator and they have a spin up machine if your car can't drive it there .

Later I'll try to a get a part number for you

You normally want to see about 13.5-14.2 volts. You may be OK, though, as the voltmeters on these cars tend to be a bit lazy and low reading.
You have a "Series III" XJ6 so you're better off posting in that section

Thank you M'Lady...I'll check the B+ terminal (if I can find it) and look for 14ish. Yes Doug that's the hose. It right angles out and then up to metal tubing. I'll try to post in the correct next time.

Hi eggdoc41,
Welcome to the Jaguar Forums! It's great to have you with us.
I have moved your thread from the forum for the X300 (XJ saloons from 1995-1997) to the forum for the Series III Xj6 like you 1986. Here you will find knowledgeable owners of similar cars.
Cheers,
Don

Part numbers--
EAC39541 hose, air filter canister to pipe
EAC39542 hose, pipe to diverter valve
Google the parts numbers with the word "Jaguar" and see what comes up

1. Welcome to the forum. Help and fun abounds here. Sense of humor a requirement.
2. Long ago on another forum a guy coined a word. I liked it so much I popularized it. electrickery. At times, I think I understand electrics, but then realize I really am barely familiar with it. But, I keep messing with it,
I sugest investing in two things. One is free here, I think! The S57 Jaguar electrical schematic. The clearest and best I've seen. Serves as a geeric tutorial as well as a specific to the car.
And a small electrical DVM meter. Harbor freight has decent ones cheap. I have three!!! One digital one analog and one that reads by inductance. Each has basic instructions on how to use it. I keep them in their boxes along with the documents!!!
I created a "patch cord". to connect my meter set for DC volts to the car via the cigar lighter outlet. Far better than the fascia unit Volts in real time at various loads and rpm's. Easy to see what the alternator is doing or not doing!!! Kinda fun as well.....

go to any parts store like O'Reilly's with the hose and ask them to match it, they are normally 5/8" inside diameter, a few hoses are 3/4" inside diameter. no big deal, it's just a hose with a 90 degree bend, you don't need to have a "Jaguar" hose.

I checked voltage at battery terminals with Fluke DMM and got 12.3 (not running) and 13.8 (running at ~ 1100 rpm). Does 13.8V reading mean alternator is weak, dying, or OK? Alternator is WAY down there and I"m not sure I can find or get to the B+ terminal.
Your alternator is supplying sufficient voltage to charge the battery, though there could still be a problem with voltage regulation or one or more rectifier diodes.
However, your battery is not well charged. In a 12 volt lead acid battery, a static charge of 12.3 volts indicates that it is only 60-65% charged:
Many auto parts stores have electrical system analyzers that can load test your battery and check your alternator for problems such as excessive AC ripple, indicating diode failure, or poor voltage regulation. Typically they will run these tests for free.

Don
