Hot engine? (4.2SC XKR)
Hiya folks, I just bought a 2002 4.2SC XKR and I... am... loving it!!! Such an incredible machine! :-D
However my one isn’t perfect, it needs quite a few jobs done, but we’ll get to that another time.
First off I have a query: my engine runs incredibly hot (at least compared to a “normal” car), even after a very short time, say ten minutes, the bonnet is very very hot, is this normal?
I haven’t measured the temperature yet, but I will soon-ish.
Oh also, after about an hour of running I noticed the inside of the car was strangly hot too, not the air temperature, I mean things like the inside walls of the footwells are hot to the touch, AND this seems especially weird: the panel of plastic buttons on the centre console (DSC/fog-lights/hazards etc) are also noticeably hot to the touch :-/
Any other 4.2SC XKR’s do this too?
Bonus question: are all 4.2’s supercharged? Just wondering if I need to type “SC” when detailing the model, or can I just say “4.2”.....

Be careful Jags and overheating don't mix well.
The temp gauge is an idiot gauge, and won't show overheating until it is (almost) too late.
Check out the real gauge at Jag Wrangler. XK8 / XKR / XJ RealGauge - TheJagWrangler
For now maybe you can check temperatures with an infra red thermometer to get some real numbers.
Not all 4.2s are supercharged so either add SC to your sig or just put XKR.

Not familiar with the car in great detail, but there is a pump to circulate water in the intercooler. That has been known to fail on occasion. It supposedly comes on when the key is turned on (engine still off). It is supposed to be by the air box, right hand side. You should be able to hear it. I suppose if it does not circulate the water, it could keep a lot of heat in the engine compartment, eventually seeping into everything. Simple to check, especially in my mind a few thousand miles away.

PS: Get a cheap ELM327 OBD tool from eBay/Amazon so you can read real-time data like water temp, air temp, fuel trims, fuel pressure, etc...

I absolutely will buy a OBD2 scanner (looking at them right now).
That “realguage” thing just looks bizarre, why on earth would Jaguar manufacture “placebo gauges”?!
Are there any XKR owners with healthy engines that could comment on how hot their engines run?

OK! You bought a 2002 Jaguar XK that you think is an "R" but your not sure and you think it has a 4.2 Engine but you don't know if it's Supercharged or not! Is that about it? Oh! and It gets HOT!!!
The first thing I would do, with the information provided is call a Wrecker and Haul the Car to the closest Jaguar Dealer or Jag Specialist and find out what you have and what's wrong with it...Why is it getting HOT? Do this before you ruin the Engine, if you haven't already!
I've always thought the 4.2 came out in the 2003 Model? You said your Jag was a 2002.......I could be wrong here since you are in Scotland...I'm not 100% sure but I think you have the 4.0 Engine.......Then you say you think it is Supercharged but your not sure.......Norfskate, have you thought about raising the Hood/Bonnet and looking? Do you know what a Supercharged 4.2 Engine looks like? (see below) Also you might want to check the Coolant......! You know where to do that ; don't you?

Woooah bcprice36, slow down, I think you may have miss read my original post. It is an R, it is 2002, and it is supercharged, I have zero doubts there!
I was curious to know if Jaguar made a non-supercharged 4.2 so I don’t always have to write SC when talking on forums (again, that was stated in my original post).
Ha, Barry_Tucker I had a MX5 ages ago too! Really fun little motor! Zero power, but great fun :-)
I’m still struggling to believe a manufacturer whould make misleading gauges tho, I mean, the car will still break regardless of what the gauges say, setting gauges like that just strikes as pointless to me :-/
Now, back to mr bcprice36, and perfect timing with the talk of a MX5, see, my MX5 had a normal little 1.6 four cylinder engine, and I know what sort of temperature it ran at healthily, SO, as per my original post, when I compare the engines I’ve previously owned, the Jag is much hotter, however it’s also more than twice the size and power of anything I’ve ever owned, ergo: is this normal (for such a big engine)?
Lastly, yes, I know what the SC looks like, yes it’s there under my bonnet, and yes all engine fluids are topped up perfectly.

Norfskate, my 4.2 XKR once warmed up runs between 96 and 98 degrees centigrade. The thermostat does not fully open till 96 degrees so these temperatures are fine.
Don't forget these engines are all alloy and give off a lot of heat, even more when you add the extra heat from the supercharger. The reason the interior surfaces feel very warm is Jaguar fitted rubbish heat insulation on the bulkhead and the heat radiates through from the engine bay.
Just plug in a scanner to find the actual temperature and post the results.

I find that even on a warmish day, the heat coming from the engine bay slowly makes the cabin temperature rise to unpleasant levels and I have to use the air con. My car is a coupe so I think it would be less of a problem on a convertible with the top down.
