I have already searched and read many posts but couldn't find my issue in the threads.
I replaced the RH headlamp. The original was attached with zip ties because all tabs were missing. My attempt to fabricate attachments worked okay but weren't quite right. There was also a lot of moisture stains inside and deep scratch outside on the cover. I decided to go with a used one in great condition off Bay. $1020.00 with tax and shipping.
The lens was pointed all the way to the right. I manually moved the gears to get it centered. After installation I got an AFS warning on the dash. I switched the new control module out with the original. The AFS warning was still on. I did the hard reset of the battery and still was on. On start up the lens will move up and down but will not move left and right. I think the module on back of the light is okay. Because there were no faults with the old system I do not think it has anything to do with modules but something internal.
I believe the wiring or motor is bad that turns the gears that turns the screw for left/right movement. I don't think I can fix wiring or motor issues without cracking open the newer light. I already have the old headlamp opened and in pieces.
Should I go ahead and open up the newer light and go from there. Is there something I am missing that would not involve looking at the internals? I tried the slap it method mentioned in another thread. I guess I could also return it as it was "tested" but doubt it was hooked up to an actual car. Not sure how that return would go but don't necessarily want to try for another used one as this one looks new outside.
The l-r motor is external, on the back of hl assembly. If you look inside the hl, are the wire's coatings ok or are there bare wires?
I doubt you could realistically make repairs.

Dumb question: Did you actually purchase the correct headlight? Most only do the up/down auto leveling on startup, while the adaptive ones will also do the left/right dance.
@2008XKRPeel , this is a delicate situation.
Lights zip tied in??
anyways, glad you rigged up some kind of mounting solution. Post a pic for others?
as for your aiming woes, I’m not clear. You found a replacement that also did not have tabs? And you went down the path of a replacement as you assumed the original is broken?
Lets back up for a moment. Specifically, what codes for the light are being thrown?
Also, myself, I would have not adjusted the aiming mechanism by hand. (For fear of “breaking” its calibration with the module and motor.) And left it to the module to adjust.
out of interest, have you seen the workshop manual section for the AFS? The successful operation is dependant on a few inputs, thus the codes would be helpful.
So I know what I want to say but it sometimes doesn't translate well when I type it out.
The new to me headlight is an adaptive one. It has all the tabs. The old headlamp didn't have the warning. I used the old control module when the warning first happened and it did not correct the issue. The original moved up/down and side to side. The new one only moves up and down and AFS light flashing. I'm thinking it has to be an internal issue possibly wiring. I will be checking codes today.
My custom made tabs are definitely a janky, hillbilly garage type solution. A little embarrass to post pics but I will. The other headlight was also zipped tied in place.
Three of the pics are from the dismantled old headlamp. The last is the other headlamp installed in the car. I can answer questions if anyone cares to even attempt this messed up looking monstrosity. It did work though. Not license plate. This is thin aluminum. Silver piece at top was used to make adjustments by bending it up or down.
That actually lines up ok like that? I'm impressed.
What codes you actually have may help, it's possible it's the light, the wiring or the controller. Best to know what is causing the warning light before you start chasing the wrong side of the system.
thanks for posting the pics. It gives others an idea how to deal with the issue.
The ODBII DTCs of JLR are extended and use 6 digits instead of 4. Also, the some prefixes are unique. So I wonder if your generic approach has you capturing all the data. Any dummy light on the dash is a product of a thrown code.

yeh, one little tap and they break!
I bought a pair for my 2008, almost like new, afs also but I need to convert to non afs.
