Hi Beck,
If your XJ40 still has its stock hydraulic brake boost system, it does not have a component called a "booster" as on vehicles with the more conventional vacuum boost system. Please let us know the symptoms and we'll try to point you in the right direction.

Thanks Don, I was fairly sure it was a vac booster on this one, I can get a photo for you if you like? Is there a big visual difference between a hydraulic and vac servo?
My brake pedal is hissing when applied, stopping distance is terrible and brakes are hard. Had brakes serviced, fluid flushed and master cylinder reconditioned already.
my current xj was a Japanese import so there are a few quirks, maybe a conversion was done?
However, hissing is not normally a behavior of the original hydraulic system, so it is possible your car was converted to vacuum power assist. If so, on the firewall/bulkhead in the engine bay in front of your steering wheel/brake pedal there will be a large cylindrical vacuum brake booster/power servo. As far as I know, most of the conversion kits used the booster from a Jaguar Series III XJ6. Here's what that part looks like (Part 1), and it is usually black in color:
If your car has been converted, check the vacuum hose connected to the check valve, part 7. It is possible that you just have a vacuum leak.
If you need a booster, try vendors who supply parts for Series III cars.

thanks so much Don! Yes it's definitely Vac, I'll check out that hose and see if I get lucky!

It might be SA not Qld but these blokes have just about the widest range of used Jag parts in the country: https://triumphroverspares.com.au
If they don't have the part(s) you need they can probably point you at someone who does.
Thanks guys, the hose connected to check valve (#7) is fine so I think i need to go ahead and replace pr rebui'lld the whole booster unit. You guys are amazing, I'll update you with progress
