Default 2002 2.5 V6 Possible Auto Gearbox Issue

I have a 2002 automatic 2.5 V6, and I'm looking for some help with what I believe is a gearbox issue.

The car idles perfectly and when revved up there are no issues or noise, so I believe the engine itself is fine.

When I drive the car I am unable to get hardly any speed, like 5mph and I don't think it changes up the gears. There is also noise coming from the car although I can't determine exactly where, I can describe it as a clunky knocking and grinding noise. This only happens when the car is moving, if it's stationary and in gear the noise is not there.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Could it be a problem with the transfer box?

Is there any way of determining this? I've seen posts about wheel bearings too

Wheel bearings don't restrict your speed so I don't think it's that.

Is there anything I can do myself to try and determine the problem.

I'm very sorry to say that I think you will be needing a transmission rebuild.

What happens if you give it a bit of gas with your foot hard on the brakes?

If I push the gas it drives but very slowly and clunky. Some dull grinding noises too.

So I tried with the footbrake pressed and there doesn't seem to be the noise. Could a brake be jammed or something?

It is possible the brakes have jammed.

You could jack the car up an with the handbrake off, gear selector in N and suitably chocked then try turning the wheels by hand, they should turn easily.

Do you use the handbrake very often?

Is this something that would have happened while the car was moving. I'm pretty sure it happened as I was braking to make a turn?
