I bought my car a week ago, and just started noticing this in the last couple of days. I got my multi meter handy, and the next time it did it, I pulled over, and with the motor running, verified the alternator is still charging, at around 14 Volts. I also noticed, when the battery light comes on, the ABS light is coming on. hopefully someone can offer some advice for both of us!!

Hey guys I had the same issue on my 04 2.0 diesel and bought a small digital volt gauge which goes into the cigarette lighter so I could watch the charge. The light only ever came on when the voltage dropped to 13.6 volts but it stayed out if it was above that. At no time did it ever stop charging the battery. The diesel engines have a thing called smart charge which changes the charge with external conditions such as temp and battery charge. I traced my fault to a problem with the smart side of the alternator and replaced it and all sorted with light out and charging at 14.2 volts.

I had the same problem. I ended up changing the battery cables and that seemed to work. the light hasn't come on in 9 months. I noticed the battery cable was extremely hot, did some research and I read the cable could be corroded therefore wasn't charging at 100%. and if I remember correctly it was the negative cable.

I added in an extra thick earth cable as the original was corroded at its point with the chassis. I also checked for heat and voltage drop on all the charge and earth cables and all seemed ok. It has been behaving itself since I replaced the alternator so fingers crossed hopefully it stays that way.
