Default 2004 x-type, drive-train whine followed by slipping

Does this sound a case of low/bad fluid, or is it a burned lsd clutch... the car was making slight drive-train whine only on acceleration (intermittently, not regularly) after the winter, then it just started slipping. Would changing the fluid do anything now or am I looking at replacing the faulty xfer case/transmission?

I was under the impression that the 2004+ models did not have the same transmission issues. It has 70,000 miles.

Sorry to drop in just to ask a troubleshooting question, but hopefully somebody else has had a similar issue!

Is it slipping to where it wont move? I would try fluid change first. Warmer weather can cause bad fluid to be thinner.

Yeah it won't move, like it's stuck in natural. In fact the tow truck driver said he thought it was stuck in neutral.

It wasn't gradual, it actually went all at once like it jumped out of gear while still on D.

Oh.... new fluid wont fix that. Its starting to sound like a TC issue. So if you have it in say Park, will the car roll? If so I would suspect TC. Even a bad tranny should keep the car from rolling in park.

Yeah of it's in park it still rolls. Somebody mentioned that it could be a disconnected/broken axle or prop shaft which forces it into neutral.

So, word back from the transmission shop - it's definitely transfer case and it is completely disconnected internally - output side has no connection to the input side.

Anybody know what this could be? I thought the 2004+ jags were less likely to have these issues, and this particular one only has 75,000 miles on it.

Well.... I guess the silver lining in all this is that its NOT the transmission. What could it be? Differential, transfer gear, output gear, coupler, take your pick. I've never had one apart so I couldn't say. Good luck though. Hopefully your back on the road soon.

Yeah it's not even rebuildable, kogs missing off the gears. Any advice for what to replace on a junkyard one so that it'll last longer? Will an 02/03 with viscous coupling work on the 04+?

From everything I've read, any year TC will fit in any year X-Type, Auto or manual. Do you need one with the viscous coupling? Does the car have DSC? Or are you asking to make finding one easier? At the bare minimum I would do bearings and seals. Setting the preload on the bearings is very important. Again, I've never done any of this, but no one else is responding so I'll help the best I can.
