Default 2007 X-Type 2.2D - No Power

Hey Guys,

I've got a 2007 X-Type 2.2D wagon, 5 speed manual. I don't have much experience with this particular model in diesel, looking for some more ideas as to why it has no power. I've read codes, no codes come up in ECM, or anything else for that matter relation to a possible power loss. It seems to start up ok, sometimes after letting it sit, it will start up and die the first time, then second time, starts up and runs ok. While on a road test, it just seems like there is no boost from the turbo. I know the turbos give problems, and so do the actuators, but the actuator seems to be working ok. I also know the EGR's give problems as well, so I decided to take this one off and have a look, and it looks like it was either replaced, or cleaned. Anyone else have any ideas of possible power loss with no DTC's? Thanks

Turbo boost hoses can split, or the hose clips let go, usually with a whooshing noise, simple fix!!

I saw this car several months ago for that issue, the clamp had rusted through and came off. As of now, Ive checked the hoses, no leaks, and no whistling sound. Im just wondering if maybe the turbo is worn out, if I remember, its over 100k. I'll have to take another look at it next week. Any other ideas?

What do you mean by: "it just seems like there is no boost from the turbo" ? Does it stutter or jerks or just slowly and smoothly revving up? Does the turbo make any kind of howling sound (like a police car siren)? You could try to unclip the turbo actuator arm from the turbo and try to move the turbo lever by hand - it must move freely. It feels like its almost loose. If you feel some restriction or rubbing, then the turbo vanes might be sticking. Another thing is the intake manifold: if the EGR was replaced due to the oil gunk then theres a good chance that the intake is also gunked up. Its quite simple to take it out and see. There are 8 gaskets on it that should be replaced after that.

No abnormal noises, just slow to rev up. When driving, just seems like no power, very slow to pick up speed when pedal all the way down. When I get in tomorrow, if I get time, I'll have a look at the intake, and check the turbo actuator. Shouldn't the actuator open up fully if I just rev it up while car is sitting still or does it need to see load?

It should open up without the load. The actuator actually works kind of backwards. Instead of pushing the turbo open, it actually holds it closed: on idle, the actuator pulls the lever in and gradually lets go if you accelerate. On vacuum actuator, the vacuum is strongest on idle, and slowly loses pressure on load. So if you take the actuator off, the lever falls to the fully open position (windshield direction). Make sure the lever movement is smooth all the way, it must not stutter or jerk.

One more thing to check: The turbo main intake hose. Its made of different material than the rest of hoses and cracks overtime. You have to unclip the jubilee clip and pull the hose off. It may look fine on the turbo, but if you move it, it cracks apart (happened on my car) causing massive air leak.

I took the actuator arm off, it moves freely on the turbo side, no binding. Once reconnected, recheck while running and it barely moves when revving up. Luckily had another X-Type come in with same engine and compared. It's in the actuator, not moving the arm as it should. Thanks for the help.
