Default after short circuit - X-type 2009 diesel completely dead - no ignition, nothinh...

Hi everyone,

I’m having a serious issue with my 2009 Jaguar X-Type 2.2 diesel (146 HP, automatic). The car is completely dead — no ignition, no dashboard lights, no starter click, nothing at all. Here's the full story:

What Happened:

While working on the internal fuse box, a metal socket wrench accidentally touched one of the metal nuts and made contact with the vehicle’s frame, causing a short circuit. Unfortunately, the battery was still connected at the time, and there was a visible spark.

What I’ve Checked So Far:

  • Battery is healthy (tested with multimeter and charger).
  • All fuses checked in:
    • Engine bay fuse box,
    • Passenger compartment fuse box.
  • Found a 60A PAL (J-case) fuse under the bonnet (engine fuse box) that showed some signs of heat damage — replaced it with a new one.
  • Still no power whatsoever — ignition does nothing, lights don't work, no sign of life.

What I suspect / want to ask:

  • Could there be another fusible link or mega fuse somewhere between the battery and fuse box that might have blown?
  • Could a ground strap or main relay be damaged or disconnected?
  • Could the BCM or ECU be fried by the short?
  • Where are all main power distribution points on this model that I can check?
I also measured voltage with a multimeter in the engine fuse box — no 12V anywhere, which suggests that power isn’t reaching the fuse box at all.

Any help or wiring diagram references would be hugely appreciated! I'm trying to avoid towing it to a dealer unless I absolutely have to.

Thanks in advance!

I have an electrical handbook, but it is for the 2004 X-Type, thus maybe it is different for your 2009... - but if it is the same:
The circuit diagram tells me that the power from battery plus goes thru 2 fuses before reaching the ignition switch. This 2 fuses are:
1. Megafuse 150A: F39 in the power distribution fuse box and
2. 15A fuse F31 in the passenger junction fuse box.

I attached a screen shot of both fuse boxes so that you can identify them...

Thank you Peter!
I'll try them both.

I replaced the cables on my X-Type between the battery and the frame and the starter and alternator because they were corroded, heating up and causing resistance charging the battery. I seem to remember that when you remove the fuse box, there are some large high amperage fuses underneath the fuse box. Maybe one of these has blown. I didn't take any pictures, but I am pretty sure I remember seeing them under there.

Thank you, Thomas!
It was the big fuse - 150A as Peter said yesterday.
I replaced it and now everything is fine.
Thanks a lot for your support, guys.
Cheers!

Good to know. Big fuse blown = big trouble. In case I ever need such a fuse: Where were you able to buy one?

Well I bought it from a local online store - Plovdiv / Bulgaria.
???? ????? 150A MEGA - ???? 16.80?? - ???? ?????? ? ???????????? -
It's compatible with Ford fuse and it costs 16Bgn / 8Euro / ~ 9-10 USD

There is a video showing how to reach it:

It's not easy - but not so hard either.

Thanks. Good to know - while I hope that I will never have to replace my Megafuse...

Btw.: INSIDE of that fuse-box are 1 or 2 relays, which may break down one day (I forgot their purpose), and if that happens, it will be very bad, because they are not accessible. However, there is a video, where someone went thru the trouble of de-soldering about 70 points to be able to open that fuse box and then solder it back together again...
