Hi, I bought a car that has only 1 key and fob. Both aftermarket. Does anyone know if the code in an aftermarket key is the same as in the original? I assume the dealership would be able to figure it out but, just like going to the doctor, I like to do my research beforehand so I don't get treated like a "dumb female". The dealer said it will be over $500 for the new key and fob to be made and programmed so I'd like to get it right the first time.

In the UK you are looking at 160 dollars tops for a key and fob programmed to the car

You can programme keys yourself though a key cutting place will probably include that

Do you mean that you have just one key, with fob for remote open /closing etc?.
Or one key with a fob and another plain key without a fob?.

The shaft of the key that has been cut is a " Ford Tibbe key"
Are these style keys also fitted on local Fords?

I would advise all X type owners to read their key "cuts".
Lots of how to do this on the web.
This will give you the information that any Ford dealer ( certainly in the UK ) or many locksmiths can cut you a key that will just open the door in an emergency. The code will be something like T243412
The numbers tell what depth to cut each notch. Worth keeping that info maybe in a phone ?
A locksmith that can cut these keys can do that if you send them a photo of your key.

Opening the door with such a key will set off the alarm !!!!

As mentioned it is easy to reprogram just the fob.

To reprogram the PATS security system it is usually stated that you need two " original" keys. This mean two keys that are properly programmed.
This does not mean they have to be the keys supplied when the car was new

I understand that some locksmiths can clone a key.
I am unsure if this copy will act like an original key.

I have only one key and one fob. Neither of them are actual Jag keys. I am definitely going to check with other dealerships in WA because the price they quoted my husband seems extremely high even considering it is an aftermarket key. Since I don't have 2 working keys, I would have to get one programmed at the dealership but I can get a fob and do it myself I think. Fortunately, I have never in my life lost or locked my keys in the car. But I also have a very intimate relationship with Murphy's law. ��

 

I also called a lot of locksmiths in the area and non of them even cut Jag keys, much less program them. I haven't checked in the Seattle area yet though. I will do that too before spending a fortune on another key. It should also cost less if I just get another key, rather than both key and fob.

 

Usually everything is more expensive in the UK so it would be unusual if you cannot put a key and fob together for much less than the dealer quote, though I suspect all dealers will sing from the same hymn sheet on price.

Do you have any lost key sites in the US?

This person does almost all fob repairs on the UK Forum and so would be able to tell you how to go about it

If you still get silly quotes in the USA then this person will be able to make the new key, he can do it to code, and will probably still be cheaper if it is sent to you from the UK

Then you only need to get them programmed. Perhaps a Jag indie that has the software but doesn't cut keys.

 

I was in the same boat as you; one key for my X-Type. I had a key and fob cut and programmed at Guardian Security on S Tacoma Way, Tacoma WA.


It cost less than the dealer, but it wasn't cheap.

 

If you do decide to get another key fob from the UK, the USA version uses a different radio frequency.

I understand the US is 315 MHZ and the UK is 433.92 MHZ

The USA versions do appear on UK Ebay but obviously not that common.
