Smile Is buying this Jaguar a bad choice?

Hi everybody first time posting. I have a few questions about a Jaguar I am currently looking at. Its a 2004 X-Type AWD. It has 94,153 miles on it and is AWD. The owner wants $5000 for it. It doesn't have any problems I can physically see. It has brand new tires and aftermarket rims. Also the leather is in good condition. Only thing wrong with it is the Check Engine and ABS light are on. He had the codes read and it Was a bad front O2 sensor throwing the check engine and its running lean fuel. The ABS came back as disabled rear ABS sensor. I'm Not sure how it became disabled but I know Jaguars have tons of electrical problems. I really like this car and need some extra input. Also if anybody has replaced these parts can you give me some prices. I'm Curious just on how much these problems will cost me. Thanks everybody.

Comparing to what?
Comparing to walking it is a good choice,
to Honda Accord it is not.
My wife loves it and I am a car mechanic, so it is a good choice for me considering price I paid, which is a few times less than you are going to pay.
Jaguars are fancy great looking cars, which are not very reliable and expensive to repair.

Don't buy it till everything is fixed to your satisfaction. $5K is not a bargain.

That said - I just paid slightly over $6k for my new-to-me 2004 in beautiful cosmetic shape and with only 70k miles ...

... and last weekend I did the O2 sensor (bank 2, sensor 1) and it was NOT fun ... but success - the part was $85 (Denso).

Now I have a rear ABS sensor codes as well - but it acts like either a dirty or loose connection.

These are really lovely cars - elegant and sophisticated. They're definitely not Honda's but ... that's a good thing, right? :-)

I just have to throw my two cents in...If I had it to do over again, I probably would not have purchased my 2004 X-type (AWD, manual trans). It's a beautiful car with many nice attributes. However, it is a nightmare in any amount of rain or snow and on roads that are even slightly wet.In those situations, it feels like RWD, not AWD. The rear end is continually trying to whip around. An important point that I apparently missed when researching this car, is that if it doesn't have a dynamic stability control switch (DSC), it is junk unless the weather is dry. Apparently some 04 X-types have them and some don't (?) This element of poor control in bad weather is a deal-breaker for me, but, hey, if the weather's not bad where you live, or you're some kind of stunt driver (!), go for it!

PS - it's not been overly expensive to repair. We've done some work on ours and, thanks to aftermarket parts, it's not been too bad. :-)

Indeed, as might've been mentioned in the other thread, the early models had a viscous coupling in the transfer case to limit the speed difference between front and rear axles. Jaguar dropped it in 2004, but it took them some time to realize that it's a good idea to fit DSC as standard since the viscous coupling was no more.

Retrofitting DSC is practically impossible, but retrofitting an early VC-equipped transfer case is perfectly doable. However, it is still a fairly expensive undertaking so you might consider waiting for a rainy day and test-driving an early model if possible, just for comparison.

Welcome to the forum tomhutchinson,

If you are serious about purchasing this vehicle, have the codes read and post them here for advice on possible causes. Post the actual codes and not what anyone tells you they mean.

A faulty HO2 Sensor and an ABS link harness or Sensor are minor issues. If the cause of the CEL is as simple as that, no one in their right mind would try to sell the vehicle without first fixing them.

Some problems, which show O2 sensor code:
bad MAF
leaking or clogged fuel injector
bad TPSensor

Default Proceed with caution !

Hi Tom
I have an 03 xtype and the engine warning light illuminated. Lovely car and a head turner. Having said that I have recently spent £800 trying to rectify the light error. I started out with a car that was having problems firing up and had a major service to try and fix. As with Jaguar specialists the game is crank up the bill. The service plus new t piece, diagnostic work and bits and bobs (for like paying the garages mortgage) impoverished me by the £800. The code check reports no faults - however the engine light stays on ( car runs beautifully) I am now informed by my Cypriot gold digger mechanic that this is because one of the Lambda sensors is faulty - there are 4 of them). These can cost $200+ each (genuine jaguar parts) and it could be any one of them - how helpful is this. One cannot even buy OEM parts to reduce cost as these suckers are chipped and the engine management computer with not accept a cuckoo.
Tom do yourself a massive favour, for what is worth from me - do not buy this car - I predict big bills, bigger headaches and even bigger frustration in the future.
Be it on your head buddy

most used car dealers here in the us will have a x-type on there lot, and they are very cheap at that,in my opinion i would find one at a lot and have them register it for you so you no it has no codes, most lots you cant trust ,but when they register it for you the motor vehichle will fail it or pass it ,so then you no all the sensors are in working
