My check engine light came on yesterday while I was idling at the bank. It's cold, I had less than 1/4 tank of gas. Have since filled gas (always use premium) to half a tank. Drove the car to Autozone today to get the code and all I got was an error message. The employee tried twice. Same Error connecting message. Can anyone help me?

The same thing happened to my '05 3.0 X-Type about two weeks ago. My SCT Live Wire Tuner/Scanner and two readers from local auto parts stores all got the same error message while trying to download the codes. The car runs fine, but I still have the blasted amber CEL.

Not sure what's causing yours and Waldo's code reading problems. The day my light came on I drove into one of our local Auto Zone's and they had no problem pulling the codes. The only problem was that their program didn't give a detailed read out what the codes meant, only saying lean mixture on banks 1 & 2 plus a 3rd code that might be the O2 sensor. But since there has been so much discussion here on this problem it was easy to see what what happening.

Took it to a garage who plugged their code reader in and it wouldnt pull any codes.Drove 5 miles to an independant Jag specialist and voila...pulled a code relating to lack of a speed input from the RHF wheel
I have given up with code readers for my later XJ as bought 2 and neither worked...one said no codes and the other failed to communicate at all
Hello Everyone!!!! I know it has been a while, but my check engine light is on again. It comes on when I fill the tank with gas (always premium), then goes off when the tank is less than 1/4 full. Yesterday I examined my gas cap to make sure it wasn't cracked or bent from when I dropped it on the ground (slightly before the light came on initially) and I noticed that this little fuel door is not all the way down. Could that be my problem? Also, getting codes P0174 and P0171. Thank you for any advice!
The P0171 and P0174 are lean conditions and generally signify a vacuum leak somewhere. Not sure an evap leak would trip those. There would be a separate code for an evap leak. Maybe you have an slight or intermittent vacuum leak. If you go enough drive cycles without the condition present the check engine light will go out. How is your car running? Do you ever feel a hesitation or does it ever go into limp mode?
Alphadude, I have had one hesitation incident since this all started. Other than that, she's running fine. I'm wondering if I would have any codes at all, if I could get the fuel door to go down correctly! Thanks
My guess is the P0171 and P0174 are unrelated to the fuel door, but maybe someone a lot more knowledgeable than I could chime in. Just seems to me those EVAP conditions would have a separate code, like P044X or P045X.
I always thought the fuel flapper on my car looked odd, but after seeing sarahsmi's picture maybe it is normal. I've attached a picture of mine below. That said, I've never had a check engine light.
Sarah, humor me and I want you to give this a try. Go out to your car and open the hood/bonnet. If you look down right in front of you, there is a black box (air filter box) that says Jaguar on it. Follow the big tube running out the right side. This tube will make a turn as soon as it leaves the air box and then goes towards the fire wall. You will then see where the tube goes from fairly smooth to an accordian. Look to the left of that by a few inches. You should see a black rubber tube about the same diameter as your thumb. You will see where the tube is bent slightly towards you and there is a metal bracket holding it up. Take your hand and reach around to the back side of that hose. Is it smooth like the front of the hose or can you feel where the hose seems to be split. The split hose would be bad and the source of your P0171 and P1074 codes. A new hose can be obtained from your local jaguar dealership or online (if you need references, let us know). The part is called a "PCV hose".
If this is good, then the next thing to do is look straight ahead and you will see a big, black bump on the right side of the firewall (assuming you are in the US). There is a small tube coming off of that near the bottom and after about 6 inches or so, there should be a gray "football" piece (about 1" in diameter) in that tube. Does that "football" look to be in good condition (ie, not cracked)? Next, if you rub your thumb on that "football", do you get some of the football to rub off? If it is cracked or crumbling, then you need to replace . This part can be obtained from your local dealership. You are after the "brake booster hose".
If you still have not found a smoking gun, let me know. The next step will require someone that you know who likes to smoke/vape. In short, with the motor cold (ie, fan not running), you blow smoke gently into the engine bay and see where it gets sucked into the engine. There are a few likely spots with the X-Type.

The PCV hose is smooth all around, however, it does have a couple of "seams" that I see/feel. Does it come that way? Also, the "football" piece doesn't appear cracked or crumbled to me and the only rub off seems like dust. Lots of dust under here!!!
Your car has the old style PCV hose. Part number for upgraded hose is C2S40863, obtainable from local Jag dealer or online. I got the picture from site sponsor SNG Barratt; they'll send you a printed catalog on request, which is handy for researching most parts.
