Cleaning Engine Bay X-Type
Simple question. I’m considering cleaning the engine bay of my 2002, 3.0, AT cat. I’ve remember reading a number of posts where people experienced engine and electronic issues following either power wash or pressure washing of their engines/bay from mis-fires, CEL activation, to dead car (won’t start, won’t crank, etc).
What should be done to clean the engine bay and engine? It’s not necessarily dirty, but it is 19 years old, and a clean engine is a good thing (maintenance, cooler running, and easier to spot those pesky leaks the may occasionally show up).
oh and one other question. I have lost the information of the forum member that is a good point of contact X-Type parts. I would like to keep my parts purchases “in house” with a reliable person then to trust someone, such as eBay that sometimes OMITS true condition of parts
Thanks all.

RBaczek, the big thing with washing the engine bay is not to spray the top of the engine. Spray the sides and bottom till you are blue in the face. But, if you must add water to the top of the engine, then nothing more than a gentle pour of water. You start spraying water (say from a garden hose) on the top of the engine, you can force water into the plug wells which will cause the car to run like hell. What you are specifically looking for is a black cylinder that is about 2" in diameter, about 1.5" tall with a plug coming off of it at a 45 degree angle. If you look behind the passenger side headlight (for your car since iti s a US market car), you will see one of the coils sitting there on the engine. Be careful around it. The others are somewhat buried, but that doesn't mean the water can't make it in there.
I would say to also get the engine warmed up a little bit (does not need to be at temp, but more than ambient) and then spray a product like Simple Green on the engine block itself. Try to avoid electronic parts like the alternator. Let it sit for a few minutes and then hose off.
As for X-Type parts, I think you are looking for DR. Dome. he parts out a lot of cars and is willing to help out other members find parts. he is in Pennsylvania. If you have problems getting ahold of him, let me know. I will call him and get you hooked up.
