Default clunky noise from drivetrain.. could this be the end of my Xfer case?

Hi guys, my 02 has 100k miles on it. Today i noticed a bit of a clunking noise when accelerating, sounded almost like a bad axle but it doesnt do it when turning as much as in just a straight line. Could this be the Xfer case? I jacket the car up and the axles looked intact. Also what are your oppinions on purchaseing a used case on ebay? I fear given their short life span that buying a used one might just present the same issue. But the price difference is substantial. Thank you. Mat

I'm noticing a similar noise on my 03xtype. clunking, ticking snapping noise between 20-30mph. It doesn't happen if you keep it in 2nd, all other gear selections it makes the noise.

Did you ever figure out a solution to your problem?

I found all the allen head bolts ready to fall out of the drive shaft front universal joint. After torqueing them to 40nm about 90% of the noise is gone after driving about 20miles. I suspect the remaining noise is due to some damage done to the universal joint and or alignment issue of the driveshaft.

Its most likely not the transfer case. I just had mine go out at 100k miles however. It started to whine under acceleration and progressively got worse over time until BOOM its life ended. Jaguar Dealership wanted $2933 for a used case with 90k miles, or $4332 for a new factory remanufactured part. Those numbers include parts and labor.

If you ever hear a noise, its best to take it into the dealership and have it diagnosed, because they will almost always diagnose it for free, saving you the time of going through forums etc.. then you can decide your fate from there.

Hope this little bit of info helped!

I agree with edge1212, when my t-case went out last year it sounded just like a failing wheel bearing (whine coming from the direction of the front suspension while under power). I took it to the dealer, before it got really bad, because I assumed it was "just" a wheel bearing.

Needless to say I was surprise when I got their diagnosis. Good thing my car was still under factory warranty...
