cold air intake choices....

Default cold air intake choices....

So i have decided to put a cold air in take on my x..But with such limeted space and no heat sheild is it just sucking hot air..I am lookin for X owners who already hae one to chime in and let me know what brads they used ,with what result;s and if they needed some custom made pipie or if i can order one some where

The factory intake is from in front of the rad..... how much colder do you want?

I was thinking this summer when I take the bumper cover off and see what's down there of doing a dual open element thing and routing it down to the bottom to draw cooler air in if there is room. I was going to mesh the bottom grill and see if they would fit behind it. But like Exexpat says, it mostly cosmetic if you don't figure out a mounting location in front of the rad.

... and it's audible. That was my main motivation. I open the hood so rarely that the enjoyment from a nice looking engine bay is almost nought.

I see mina has one that look's like the pipe goes in front of passenger light..Hmmm,not sur if it;s a crappy pic..
So in fact you have gained nothing(exexpat) except an audible diffrence..
Sounds crazy but maybe i should mould some fibreglass to make a peice,that connects to a couple pieces of hose..that then goes to air box..kinda like the old air box mod..but the 2.0 version..and if I cant make it look somewhat factory..i wont bother...Hmmmmmm

THere would be no point in making the mod Irish if you don't gut the airbox, then run some big (4-6") tube to where you can get more cold air (again in front of the rad down low) because the restriction in the airbox is not the filter type but the fact the ports are those 2 little snoots beside the lock. They gather cooler air but just not enough to make a performance difference. You can get a K&N filter replacement that breaths better but you still don't have enough air. I've seen the adding of more ports via some god awefully ugly rad hose type thing beside the snoots, but the design of the airbox to me is the challenge. If the filter sat lower you could carve a 6" hole in the lid of it and port it with a big tube down to the bottom grill.

Forgot about the audible part, which is the only real reason other than the cool factor is way high.

On a I want to copy you note.....the engine covers and battery box. Did you just sand them flat and paint with a nice gloss? And when you removed the airbox, did it leave that perfect space for the air cleaner or was there a bit of modification required.

This car was used for auto cross and road racing events. I now have a 2006 X-type Sport

Found comparable gains to the Mazda6 V6 with their cold air intake. Even more with the power programmer and full catback installed.

wow..you got that thing performace modded to the nuts..
how's the tranny and xfer case holding up..obviousley u turn wrenceh as at least a hobbie,Me i feed people for a living,just into my jag now bout 2 years...did that cold air intake ever get made so it looks a little better...and where and how much for one....like the fact you have the pipe running down in a "more"proper placement

the intake was designed purely for performance, so nothing attractive about it! We removed the foglight assembly to get air to it as well as a duct behind the lower mesh feeding to the intake. a proper elbow was later fabbed out of mandrel-bent aluminum at the intake manifold, then we thermo-tec heat-wrapped it to keep underhood temps off the piping.
I do not have this x-type anymore. it was sold to another auto-x'er. Transmission blew,before I ever installed any mods.... but that was covered under the first tranny recall. the transfer case never blew, but my close friend's transmission shop maintained it every 6 months for about $200 each fluid change

Trust me just drop a k&n drop in filter and you have the best results, unless you want it to be noisy lol

Wow, I didn't realize this was your old car. Things are much clearer now and you seem to have settled down a bit on the mod and perf frenzy.

Yes and yes (no modification to the covers was required - that filter just fills the space perfectly).

Crazy... I didn't realize that was yours either. That car was definitely one of the ones i was checking out pretty often before i bought my X. My plans are to beat on mine as a daily driver until the tranny blows, then gut it, swap in a 5 speed, import a Mondeo turbo kit and go racing (until the motor blows.. Haha)!

I liked everything about that car except for the little diffuser flaps on the chin and skirts.

agreed. the diffusers were UGLY. but.... in my defense, I used them for downforce at a private mile-long dragway and road racing. This car was rarely driven on public streets.

did 151mph with ECU tune.

was solid as a ROCK at that speed

Mine maxed out at about 135, maybe could have squeezed another 5 mph out of her but i ran out of room..So it looks like your mods paid off
