04 X 3.0: Noise when starting when cold - moving or stationary. Frequency increases with rpm. Noise diminishes with warming up. Goes away completely when at running temp.

I am not certain about origin of noise except for sound seeming to come from rear cylinder bank. I cannot feel any vibration with hand on cam cover. Am fearful. Could camshaft bearing go bad?

You never mentioned what the noise SOUNDS like. Tapping? Squeeling? Whining? What is the oil level? Need some more info on this one.

 

Oil level is OK - within the hatched range on dipstick, lowest hole, if that is more accurate - certainly no oil light on! (I just had the oil pan gasket replaced about 1k ago.)

Noise? difficult to describe. Not ticking or tapping. Too high a frequency for that, but not squealing. Whining might be closer. The frequency does increase with increased engine speed.

Also, not much mileage on the car, 41,000 miles.

 

You mention that it occurs when the car is cold....possible power steering noise. Fluid is more viscous cold, and may present some minor noise. Pump is located towards the rear of engine. PS fluid level OK?

How loud is it??

 

Although not specifically mentioned, is the sound there when you are driving the car as opposed to idling...and between about 28-32mph? Reason I ask is the word "whining" was mentioned. If it is, that sounds like the propshaft.

 

Looks like the OP hears it while stationary.

 

The sound is engine, not trans/drive shaft related. Sound is there stopped and with no effort to turning the steering wheel. My reference of the source of the noise should be made more accurately: the rear cylinder bank on the passenger side (timing belt end of engine?).

Level is very noticeable. I would not call it loud, conversation is possible.

Alfadude: is that as in Alfa Romeo? In my younger years I had a 66 Guilia Sprint GT Veloce!

 

Yeah, as in Alfa Romeo. Had a 1991 164S for a number of years and absolutely loved it. Very underappreciated car in my opinion. Hated to give it up, but it was going to need an engine rebuild at some point and traded it in at 165K miles. Have a soft spot for them. Even looked at buying a 166 my Italian mechanics had imported themselves for a customer at one point. Just seemed so much different than a German or Japanese car. Can't explain it exactly, more of a mechanical feel like a machine and not so much as something more sterile feeling as controlled by electronics. Sounded great and when you opened up the hood you actually saw an engine and not a lot of plastic covers. Absolutely LOVED the chrome intake runners.

Sorry to hijack your thread, but it's always nice to go done memory lane on that car for me.

Engine cold = noise, rpm dependent. Whining, sounds like, maybe, bad bearing, front of engine, rear bank of cylinders. Finally went away after 5 min +/-.

I now surmise that this is the location of the serpentine belt. The noise diminishes as the temp of the engine rises - I think. Is this possible? Are the bearings on the various pulleys lubricated from within the engine?

Should I be very frightened?

My wife's 02 2.5L X-Type sounds like it is doing the same thing. If the engine is cold it whine's when you increase and decrease in speed. The whine goes away when the engine warms up, and the whine increases and decreases along with the cars speed, however when she is stopped the whine stops, however as soon as she starts to go the whine starts again. We park our car in the garage overnight, usually this time of year our garage is around 30 degrees, it also happens outside where it is anywhere between -10 to 20 degrees. Her car is headed to the dealer this TuesdayI am interested to see what they find.

 

My 02 X has been to my local dealer who said I needed a new serpentine belt (40) and possibly a new alternator or other accessory part driven by that belt? I'm having my local Jaguar office take a look at it on Wednesday, so I should be interested to see what all they find wrong with my baby....

 

Well picked up the wifes car yesterday from the Jaguar dealer. They told me my noise was caused by the prop shaft, and so far they seem right. The noise has gone away. They put in a new prop shaft for around $750.

 

Good deal on that prop shaft. It used to be +$1,000 installed.

 

Both my X-Types (02 and 04) made this noise until the car warmed up for the last 20,000+ miles each in a cold start (less than 30 degrees). All you need to do is get the car on a jack and grease the prop shaft and it takes care of it. $750 to $1000 is a very costly repair for a car that can be had for less than $10,000, especially if it's something you can do yourself. Sounds like you got raked over.

 

As I have the money and know really nothing about cars $750 seemed fair on a car that I don't owe any money on or anything. Cheaper to fix it than to buy a new car. I trust the local dealer, if they said it needed to be replaced than I trust them.
