Default Coolant Leak

I've been trying to narrow it down by reading some of the threads here, and I believe I may have narrowed it down to the Thermostat Housing.

Attached are pictures of what I have, but we're really looking at trying to get this fixed asap, and people around here like to charge an arm and a leg to even look at a Jag.

The black "triangle" in the center of the pipe in the first picture is your thermostat. The angled flange above is part of the thermostat housing that bolts to the block of the engine. there has recently been a rash of leaks from this spot. There is an o-ring under that flange that may need replaced. You may also find that applying a little bit of RTV may be necessary to stop the leakage.

With all this being said, getting that piece off can be a little bit of a bear as it is not really spacious up there and you have quite a few hoses to play with to get things to move nicely.

If you need more info, let me know. I have been into this part of the car and can hopefully answer a lot of questions before you get too far into things.

I was looking again, and it looks like it also could be coming from a T-shape hose directly below the air intake box. On the right side inlet, facing the vehicle. There was some coolant up there as well, leading me to believe that it could be just dripping onto the thermostat.

rpeters, that is possible too. There is an o-ring up on the t-piece that may be getting old and in need of replacement.

Odds are, you will need to remove the t-stat housing and plastic piping. Once you get it out, the o-ring joint is held together with a friction clip.

So, take a flat bladed screw driver and remove the silver clip that is in the plastic (should pull out with very little effort).

From there, you can pull the 2 plastic pieces apart and expose the o-ring. Go to your local auto parts store and they should be able to match up a coolant o-ring for you (that is how I got mine, was like $2).

From there, you can put the new o-ring on, push the pieces back together and re-install the clip. Probably a good idea to replace the o-ring on the t-stat housing where it connects to the engine block.

I didn't do that and now I have a very minor leak coming from that joint.

just check over the "t" housing. Mine had a hairline crack in it. I had to buy a whole new housing but it came with all the hoses clips and thermostat. I think I paid 130. with shipping.

Let us know if we can help.

Good Luck,
The Dr!

A horizontal stress fracture of the upper part of the plastic Tee is most common..... and invariably shows in several places vertically beneath. If you have coloured coolant in your system... you will be able to trace this back to the source.

Your best bet..... replace the Upper Coolant Hose (item-1 in the attached PDF)

It's definitely this. When replacing it, is it something someone is capable of doing at home?

Also, I'm assuming I will have to drain the radiator?

Is it best to get it from beneath, or above?

You will need to take off the air box from above and go from under the car. Its not hard just time consuming. I drained mine and did a flush and fill as well. It was due.

Any questions I will be happy to walk you through it.

Good Luck,
The Dr!

rpeters: Several members recently did the same repair to their coolant systems and shared their learnings & pictures in this thread. Read to the end to see what they would do differently if they had to do it again:

Yes, you need to drain coolant from the radiator. Thermo describes how in this thread:
https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...-valve-126462/

I believe one of the threads has pictures of the radiator drain in the "How To" section:

Thanks guys, it looks like something I'm more than comfortable doing. I'll just have to knock it out next weekend when I get some time off, and find a place to order the replacement parts.

The way it's looking, I'll be doing a few things to the car to keep it roadable.

Definitely going to stick around here, you guys are very helpful.
