Cooling fan

Yes, you can add a toggle switch for your fan to come on, but I do not recommend it. Odds of human error are much higher than actually fixing the issue. As sov211 stated, proper diagnosis is likely a better option than masking the symptoms. Aside from there there could be other reasons why your car is overheating such as a bad thermostat or head gasket.

I recently bought Haynes shop manual #5631 (purchased through Amazon) that covers the X-Type. In chapter 4 there are instructions for diagnosis and replacement of either the two electric fans or the coolant temperature sensor. If the fan motors work then it's the coolant sensor.

Unless it is the fan control module in the engine compartment, which is far more likely. Did the Haynes manual mention that?
Relying on a Haynes manual is not a good idea. The information is insufficient, sometimes misleading and sometimes wrong. You can get the factory repair manual on cd, often on eBay.
And still no word from Bryan? In fact, since Bryan did not identify his car in any way, for all we know he may be driving an xj6 or an xj8 or an XJS or...

The Haynes manuals seem to have a bunch of DIY info but they are a little 'shy' on complicated things like Gearboxes and Air Conditioning. I have seen mentions of "Due to the technical nature and hazards of handling refrigerant, repairs to the climate control system should be done by the Dealer or other qualified personnel."
Things like the Engine Management wiring is also often missing from these manuals.
I believe the standard advertising slogan is something like 'All procedures in this manual are based on an actual teardown and rebuild of the vehicle."
Repairing a vehicle and writing about it is one thing, but re-printing copyrighted material is another!!!!!
JTIS IS THE FACTORY MANUAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
