dead on-board computer
I will start off by saying I don't know much (or really, anything) about cars with computers; it's my wife's car and this is what I am being told:
Since buying the car in 2021 (2006 3.0 AWD), it's been one major thing after another. The car has stranded her a number of times (transfer case/transmission, cooling system three times)—each time she gets it fixed, something else blows out. We have a competent mechanic (his mother has the same model!), and this is what he is telling us:
The main CPU is dead—probably due to being overheated from when the cooling system decided to stop working. He has located another CPU however it needs to be programmed to the factory specs for this model with its particular options. He doesn't have the capability to do that type of programming and is having trouble locating someone who does know.
Does this make sense? Any thoughts? My wife is at her wits end with the car but doesn't want to dump it. We are in the NJ/NYC area.

Eddie, sounds like you have a good working relationship with your mechanic. Make him an offer of say "you will go in on half of what is costs to get a SDD program and programming cable for a Jaguar" This should run you under $200. SDD is the software that Jaguar dealerships use to diagnose cars. That will also have the ability to program the CPU to make a new one work in your car. Saves you some money and gets the mechanic a new tool at a fairly low cost.
Based on the issues you have had, have you run a CarFax type report on your car? I only say this as it sounds like you got a car that has been flooded and can be prone to tons of problems. If the car spent a lot of time down south in Florida and then in 2021 suddenly moved up to the NY area, that would be a big tell tale. Especially if the car was along the coast for those prior years. Unfortunately, it is way too easy to take a flooded car from Florida and get it "road worthy" and a clear title again. A lot of times you will see it make a jump like Florida to Texas or Alabama, and then on up north. by jumping the title around, some states do not recognize a remanufactured title, so, they give the car a clean title. A remanufactured title is saying the car was totaled and was "repaired sufficiently to be considered road worthy". In the case of a flooded car, this could be nothing more than drying it out, replacing a module or two to make the car run again, and a good cleaning of the interior. Not saying that this is the case with your car, but a little bit of investigation may save you a lot of heartache and money.
