Default the dreaded P0915

Hi,
I've got an 03 X-type 2.5, and I have been experiencing an issue with the j-gate that has been showing P0915, which is a j-gate signal failure. The interesting thing is that I can flip into the j-gate at 4 without issue, but if I downshift to 3 or 2 I will get the gearbox fault light and that is when it posts P0915. Another interesting thing that I haven't noticed others with similar problems have is that I have no loss in driveability, the jag simply seems to override my shift and goes back into regular "D." I'm thinking I need to take apart the center console and get down to check connections to the shifter assembly? I am not a mechanic, just an amateur DIYer, so I was hoping for input. I also am seeing an entire shifter assembly on ebay, I was wondering if anyone had a similar problem that required total replacement, in which case I would probably pick up that assembly. Thanks very much for any help.

PS. Speed at which I shift does not matter; if I am at a dead stop and I shift it happens as well.

just to update, and I realize i didn't mention it in my original post, I checked all fuses associated with the TCM and none were fried. Everything seemed ok in both fuse boxes. Thanks again guys!

This may sound odd, but try moving the tilt steering wheel to a few different positions. Start with it all the way up and see what happens.

When I had this same symptom it ended up being one of the wires from the shifter to the TCM being pinched by the tilt column down too far.

I actually have already tried that, after seeing that mentioned in another thread that had the same situation. Seems to be ineffective, I started from fully pushed in and gradually projected the column out, but no luck.

Not in and out (telescoping), I meant up and down (tilting).

sorry that wasn't very clear, when I was trying that fix out I did move the column up and down as well as telescoping. Is there any way you can describe the wire, just so I can rule it out? Is it accessible/visible above the driver's side footwell? I would assume it runs higher up in the column if pinching is possible. Thanks again for your help!

I looked for the electrical prints I had marked up when I was troubleshooting the harness, but must have been tossed when I cleaned up the garage last fall. Wish I could help more!

I just looked that fault code up and the first thing that pops up is the shifter adjustment. Two things there. First is the cable adjustment, the only adjustment that i have been able to do is down under the trans where the cable attaches to the bell crank. There is a small 7 or 8 mil bolt behind the black cover. Set the shifter in R (not running) and make sure the trans is in or close to R. loosen the bolt and let the trans settle into R by jiggling the bell crank a little. Second is the range sensor on top of the trans. It is very specific for where it goes. It also uses a special tool to get it perfect. As a shadetree or independent, you could just move it either way in very small increments and see if your MIL goes away. The range sensor is right under the battery and requires removal of the battery to adjust. Just remember, small movements.

Great, thanks guys! The pdf combined with both walkthroughs should give me a good crack at a fix I think. Hopefully I can get the car up to try it out one of these weekends, I'm seeing my pop for father's day this weekend so maybe we can check it out together (since the golf course we used to hit every year just shut down). Thanks again!
