Engine light on

I had to recently disconnect the original battery to clean it because the engine would not start. After reconnecting and getting a jump from AAA, I took the car out for a 30 minutes ride. I noticed the engine light on. The car performed as usual and will restart again. Does the engine light have to be reset? If so, is this only performed by a dealer? I have a 2003 X Type. I am thinking of getting a new battery also to be on the safe side.
jbrewer, take the car to a local auto parts store and ask to borrow their code reader. You will need to plug the car into the OBD-ii port located under the steering column. Note the code and write it down. Come back here and post what code(s) you got. From there we can lead you to a list of possible problems and solutions.
It is hard to say if your problem is related to the battery or not. So, get the code read and we will take it from there.
