Default Fob probs

Hi guys. My 55 plate x-type 2.2 estate is giving me gyp and I am hoping someone can help. Please read through this before replying as I've tried everything I can think of and all the tricks I can find online, to no avail.
My key fob stopped working. So I checked the PCB and resoldered the broken button connections. It worked for a while then gave up again. So I bought a new one from ebay. Programmed it in, using the "4 goes on the key" method, and it worked. Tested all functions and all was ok. But when I went back to the car a couple hours later, it didn't. So I did the program thing again. And it worked. A couple hours later, it didn't. So I brought the car home and put the car's battery on charge. The battery is maybe 6 weeks old. But the fob still didn't work. Did the four turns on the key and got the chime, but got no chime when I pressed the fob button. I tried it with the door open, closing it before and after removing the key. Even squirted a drop of WD-40 in the keyhole, and exercised the key gate several times beforehand. It's still not working and now I'm sort of out of options. I can't afford exorbitant dealer fees and I'm quite capable of fixing it myself if I know where to look for the problem.
Has anyone any ideas?

I stumbled over a few things in your post: What is a 55 plate X-Type?
You bought a "what" on ebay? Just the PCB or a whole not flip key?
I assume just the PCB, otherwise would would have mentioned something about the transponder as well.
So you do not have transponder issues, just the remote?
You are kind of mentioning only 1 key... Don't you have 2 or more keys? How are the other keys doing?
I also assume. when you mention the battery, you do not refer to the 12V Car battery!? The car battery could also be a problem source, if it is not top notch.
The battery in the remote would be a 2032. Do you have a 2032 in there, or a thinner one, which dislodges and does not have electrical connection at times?
And there is no corrosion on either battery nor contacts of the PCB, which would hinder electric flow at times?
After checking all that, I would suspect an issue with the door locking module. Without knowing the specifics of the X-Type door locking module, a possibility could be cold welds (broken solder points) of the power supply points of that module.

Default Hi Peter

Thanks for your reply. "55 plate" refers to the age of the car, late 2055. I bought the car second-hand, with only one key. I bought a whole new key with integral transponder. Neither transponder works. I hoped someone could point me in the right direction regarding finding the fault, as it seems to me that it is the car's remote locking system that's at fault. The new key has a brand new battery of the correct type, it did program in at first, but now it doesn't. I'm confident now that the fault is not with the key, but with the car.

I am still very much confused about what "55 plate" is supposed to mean. I assume you are aware that "55 plate" cars will not be on the market for another 32 years.
That is 2055 - I can't tell, if there will be another X-Type in 2055, but I know there was no X-Type in 1955. But let me know, if you have a 1955 D-Type - I would love to buy one...
This year we are writing the year 2023 AD (anno domini), where we have "23 plate" cars...
So I just assume you have a "05 plate" X-Type...
But if you discovered the secret of time travel and got lost in time, let me know, and tell me, how to travel back in time, where the cars were great and the planet was still healthy...

I am afraid, that also does not clear up the question, if your trouble is with the transponder or with the remote...
So here are a few basics: If your transponders are not programmed to the Jag, you will not be able to start the car.
Problems with the transponder do not effect the function of the remote and visa versa.
If you have 2 OE keys with operation transponders, it is easy to self-program the transponder in the 3rd and 4th key.
If you have one key, with operational OE transponder, a locksmith can clone that one, but then you can't use those 2 to self-program a 3rd and 4th key.
If you do not have a key, with with you can start the car, you have to go either thru Jaguar to solve this issue (which will cost!) or, as I understand it, get your car towed to a locksmith with extremely specialized equipment, and having those keys matched to your car there will cost accordingly.
If you do not have a key with an operational & matched transponder, I do not think that programming the remote is possible.

Hi Peter and thanks for your response.
First let me explain how our registration system works, as it can be difficult, even for many Brits.
On the 1st of march each year, a new 'year designation number' is issued. This year, it was 23. Then, in September, we get another one, which is the actual year, plus 50. So a '55' plate car was registered sometime between September 2005 and march 2006. Mine was registered in February 2006.
As to my fob problem, I hadn't considered that a new key would come with a dead battery, or that the 'new' battery I fitted to the old key, were both dead. I thought I'd try a new one, which I bought from an electrical store. They came in pairs, so I fitted one in each key and tried the pairing game with them. They both worked. The new key now needs to be cut and the transponder programmed in, but I have other problems to deal with first!

OK, so now we know what kind of X-Type you have: It is a post 2004.25 revision and pre 2008 facelift. I do not think anyone outside of the UK would have heard of a 55 plate car.
Oh yes: It is likely that new keys come with dead batteries. And you cannot trust new batteries. Always use a multimeter to check the 2032 batteries.
Programming the remote controls can be done DIY.
If you have 2 OE keys and you want to self-program the transponder of the 3rd and 4th key, that can also be done DIY.
If you have only one OE key with operational transponder there are 3 ways to make the second one work:
1. DIY - which I would not recommend, but it works: Remove the operational transponder capsule from the OE key and mount it close to the ignition lock. This would obviously render the theft protection provided by the transponder useless.
2. via locksmith / dealer: Proper programming of new key into the system as 2nd OE key. After that, you should be able to self-program a potential 3rd and 4th key transponder.
3. via locksmith / dealer: Having the one OE key transponder, which you have, cloned. This would probably not allow you the self-program a potential 3rd and 4th key.
