Angry gearbox fault

Tonight my wife hit a deep pot hole in the road. She said the head lights immediately went out and the car began to die. She does not remember if the car shut off by itself or she turned it off. It would not start then and the gear shifter will not come out of park. Any suggestions as to what can be the problem???

Like JagV8 stated, Car Details??? I see you are new, so before you ask, even though they all look similar, there were quite a few changes through out the years. Also, if you don't mind me asking, where in Ohio are you? There are a few of us scattered about and may be able to lend some "local" support.....

She may have "knocked" the shift linkage out of whack... That will stop the car from starting and the gear shift from moving. Does the car have power now? Does everything else work when you put the key in?

Let us know...

Sorry for your misfortune. Is she a relatively new wife? Maybe she hasn't had the training yet? - Mine has never "hit" anything....but alot of stuff like this happens to her car whilst it is parked in the mall parking lot!

+1 to comments "What year/eng is it?" very important info.

check that battery is still secured.

Well, Hmmm... The car you listed doesn't exist......

These do..Assuming the year is correct at 2005:

S Type 3.0 V6

S Type 4.2 V8

X Type 3.0 V6

Please let us know.... Honestly, we really want to help...

You're in the wrong forum! Maybe a mod will move the thread.

Your gearbox is NOT used in any S-Type, I think, though it may be mechanically similar.

The X type has a totally different drive train set up... Transverse mounted engine...Transaxle... etc.. they are nothing like the S except for the 3.0 V6...

Yes, mods...Please move to the x type section. And we still don't know if the car has power or not... The only question being answered is what year/engine/model.... without more information and dialog there may never be a solution..

Welcome to the correct forum, so tell me, did it die right there or did she make it home?
Do you have any power when you turn the key? Radio lights on dash etc?

Sounds like you might have tripped the inertia switch, it's a safety measure to shut everything down so if you have a serious accident the power is cut and the fuel pump wont cover you with gas and light you on fire.
