Default Heat is on

Just got a 2002 X-Type and the guy I got it from said that there is a problem that is linked to the navigation system and the heater always being on and that it is related to "some sensor". Nav system panel doesn't come on and the heater is always on. ???
Anybody know anything about this? Totally new to Jaguars, but not new to automotive mechanics and electricals. Just thought I would join and ask here before ripping into it myself.
Thanks in advance for replies / solutions.

WilliamV, because your screen is dead, I would have to venture to guess that the heat issue is related to this and the components failed when the heat was activated. So, this leaves it in the heat mode. I would say that atleast you will end up getting a new radio for in the car. I am sure a local wrecking yard will have one that you can slide in for not too much money. I would then see what you have at that point.

If it is a sensor being the problem, then it is most likely the air temp sensor. If you look to the side of the steering wheel, you should see a small vent (about 1" x 1" or 25mm x 25mm). This is the intake for the sensor. It has a small fan that runs any time the car door has been opened and continues to run while the car is being driven (some people are able to hear it run after they shut off the car). But, that is what monitors the temperature of the interior when you have the automatic temp control selected.

Thanks for the reply. I will have a look at the air temp sensor that you mentioned.
The previous owner stated that the screen quit and then the heat came on, stayed on and can't be turned off. Which is what it is doing.
I am looking for trouble-shooting routines to get to the root of the problem more than I want to just throw parts at it, hoping that eventually one of them will solve or fix it.
Looking for circuits, breakers, etc... to test and check to determine the fault.

Is it possible that it is the Navigation / Heater Climate Control Module that is causing the problem and not the entire nav screen unit?
I have noticed that when I turn the key to the accessories position, the nav panel screen flickers slightly. ???
Also; Is there a specific relay for this? I have googled and looked at the user manuals and can not pin point anything specific.

William, if you have the NAV setup, then the heat-A/C and NAV are all part of the same. It is possible that an internal failure of the module can be causing what you are seeing. Without being able to put my hands on the car, it is hard to say with 100% certainty what is causing the problem. I would need to look at my diagrams (don't have them with me at the moment due to being on travel) to confirm power sources. The only relay that I recall from memory is the main power relay for the interior of the car. So, you would be seeing the whole interior of the car flashing with the screen.

The flicker that I mentioned when the key is turned to the accessories position is only a slight glow around the top edge of the screen and dims out instantly. Nothing else in the interior of the car flashes or flickers.

If it is just the display itself that went out the touchscreen might still be active. If the screen that shows up when you start the car would normally have access to the climate control you might be able to change your settings even with a blank screen. If you know the exact spots for the different buttons where you could change the temperature, fan settings, etc. you might be able to get it to work. Or if you randomly start touching areas of the screen and something changes you at least know the touch screen works. If nothing happens then it is something else.
