Help! Can't get my X Type out of park!
Hi all. Can anybody offer advice on my 2004 X Type 3.0 SE which is stuck in park. I entered the car yesterday, started it. all OK. Was unable to take it out of park. Brake lights both worked correctly, battery is fully charged, and the car is parked on my level driveway. I removed the J-Gate trim hoping and expecting to find a Park overide lever underneath and down the side but could'nt find one despite close examination with a torch and probing with a longish screwdriver. I know there has to be an overide but Jaguar seem to have succeeded. in hiding it.. Any advice on finding it would be greatly appreciated lads (& lasses)!
Thanks for the reply Dell, I'm probably being dense but I can't see any content in your message, apart from details of you and your Jag! If your reply was the forums way of saying hello to a newbie, then that's always good. Hello.
If you're having trouble with the link, this is the bit you want. It worked for me
"To get out of Park manually.
First remove the wood trim around the gear lever.
(Open the ashtray, use fingertips to lift the front edge, rear will follow), then look down the left hand side of the J Gate. Normally, with the ignition on, every time the brake pedal is pressed, the small black disc (About 3/4 inch dia) with two small lugs sticking out, rotates about 30 degrees.
That releases the lock, so if you have a suitable thin rod to hand, use it to turn the disc manually you can pull the gear lever back.
Have a look when it is working and you'll see the disc move and therefore what you have to replicate."

Thanks for your reply. When I examined the LH (passenger) side of the gate assy with inspection torches and wth the ignition on, I can't see any sign of a 20mm dia disc with lugs, and when I press the brake pedal there is no sign of movement or noise, or vibration coming from the gate assy.. The only noise I hear is a very faint click (like rrelay contacts closing) coming from somewhere around the steering wheel cluster area, when I move the gear shift as if to take it out of park, which is also accompanied by a rapid bleeping when the ignition is off. I'm now wondering if a relay or solenoid has malfunctioned somewhere!
I think The rapid beeping happens when the car is not actually in park. Kind of a warning beeping

In my absence from the forum I'v found that elusive disc on the side of the J-Gate. The bracketry on my car only leaves a 6mm gap to look down the side and I found it tucked behind the wiring harness. At least now I'm mobile again but alas, still cant shift out of park without groping for that magic disc again! I've checked all the fuses, and also replaced both the brake light switch, and also the multifinction switch on the brake pedal. Are there any other components, either electrical or mechanical, that could be preventing operation?
There must be a solenoid in the J-Gate shifter which is activated when the brake is pressed. As I'm not hearing any clicks coming from the J-Gate, I'm now surmising that this is where the fault lies. Is this solenoid a seperate replaceable part, of the J-Gate, and if so what's the part number,as Google does'nt bring up any results at all!
Progress update. I bought a replacement J-Gate from Ebay, as in your link, thanks Dell. I tested it before fitting it to the car , solenoid clicked in, park released. Then I, full of confidence, completely fitted it in position and finished the trimming. only to find it not releasing from park! Now I've got to disassemble it all again and theck the electrical connections. Which brings me to a problem I found when I removed it previously, that there was'nt enough room to slide the J-Gate assy out.. Is there a method of removing the J-Gate that does'nt require first renoving the Adaptive Restraint Module. Also, is info available that details the pin designations of the 11 - way connector? Incidentally, since startin the repair I've been dogged by the fact that the X-Type electrics were extensively altered in June 2004. Mine, being registered Sepember 2004 puts it right in the middle of 'no mans land' when it comes to getting parts or specifications!
