HELP! How to replace x-type starter motor
I have a bad starter motor on my '04 X-type 2.5L that I need to replace.
I see the location of the starter and trying to find easier access to it.
I have Technical Service Publication for Jag but the process to replace it seems too complicated.
Has anyone replace their starter motor and know an easier way to replace it?
Thank you.

Everything fron the top.
Remove battery and battery box
Pull back rubber cover at end of starter solenoid and undo wires
Un bolt 2 bolts that attach the starter to the bell housing/ Transmission. - these are vertical bolts, you can see them looking straight down from above. One of them has a ground wire on it.
Then lift starter and wiggle its way out of there.
As a side note, the manual transmission starter motors can get a the bendix/pinion gear all gummed up with clutch dust, and then it wont engage properly and will make horrible grinding noises. This can be easily taken apart, cleaned, relubricated and put back into service.
Why are you removing yours?

Thanks a million Sport30!
And also for pointing out what causes the noise which is exactly why I'm planning to replace mine. I have 100K mi on the car and it started making the horrible noise at COLD start-up. This noise is heard only when the car is COLD. I'm sure this is not from the accessory belt though could be from the belt tensioner. So I wasn't 100% positive whether it is in fact from the starter but since you are also pointing out about it, it must be it!
BTW, is there any expected issue by disconnecting the battery such as need to reset anything?
Also, have you changed spark plugs on the car? Was it hard to access spark plugs?
I'll probably have to change my belt and the tensioner at the same time.
Thanks so much for help!

Plugs aren't hard, just time consuming as you need to take off the intake (or raise it up at the very least). My plugs were NASTY at 100k

Sport30,
Did you have any problem removing the 2 bolts holding the starter?
First, I could not get to the bolts hence needed to remove the intak manifold to be able to reach.
Second, I could not turn the bolts. I lubricated, used different tools, but eventually broke my 3/8 inch adaptor and still didn't turn a bit.
How were you able to reach the bolts without removing the manifold? And what kind of tool did you use?
Thanks a million!

Just for future reference, I find 3/8 drive ratchets and sockets brutal on torqued bolts. I have 1/2 drive 6 point torque sockets and a, 18" extention and that will get pretty bolt undone...or snap it off in the process which is never fun.

X type starter motor
Hi Sport30,
I have just come across this post you put up a while ago about the starter motor. Im having similar problem with my manual 54 plate x type and want to get it off to clean it.
I stripped out the battery and casing and also the air intake and I'm trying to identify which bolts I need to take out to remove the starter. Is there any help you could provide please?
