Default Help! Red fluid leak!

Opened my hood and found red fluid all over! It seems to be coming from the plastic container in the upper right under the hood.

in this picture it is the red fluid container in the upper right hand side

First i need to know what fluid this is (power steering? transmission?)

Any help?

Looks to me like your brake fluid. What does it say it is on the cap?

Sniff, Hmm spidey senses tingling, but like as not power steering fluid.

Why not ask your question in the X-type section for a better response, this section is for New member introductions.

Or even contact Charles Ofria directly about DTM 68 in New Jersey (he took the picture after all) tel 1-888-279-0343

RUnner, if it is the one wit the black top to it that is bolted to the fender, that that is your coolant overflow. Sounds like you have been bit by the broken nipple fairy. It is not an unusual occurrence to have the connection at the bottom of the bottle to crack, allowing coolant to be leaked out. Granted, I would also do a good inspection of the hoses in the area as you are talking about it being sprayed around and normally that just seems to dribble out on to the ground. For there to be spray, that would tell me that it was under force, which the bottle shouldn't be. But, anything is possible.

If you look at the hose on the bottom that is pointing at the engine, you can move it around a little bit and you should see the crack in the plastic. Unfortunately, the fix is to get an overflow bottle (they have been redesigned and are stronger).

Is coolant red, though? Runner..do what I do...even though it sounds gross. Taste it and feel it. If it has a sweet taste to it, it's coolant, if it doesn't, then it's not (obviously). Check the color of the leaking fluid to other color of brake and power steering fluid. That will tell you what it is. Then you can try to find the leak.

I'm sorry but that's a dangerous thing to do. Glycol based coolant (not that this is the liquid in question) is extremely poisonous.

I suppose it could give a spray effect if it was leaking onto the fan.

Motor you need to upgrade your wine merchant, true there was a time when you may have found antifreeze in certain "Austrian Whites" but that was in the mid 80's.

Please no one start tasting fluids, although a sniff will usually point you in the right direction.

I've done it numerous times and, aside from the occasional bouts of Tourrette's and not being able to type very well, I've never had an issue...lol

Rich...when tasting coolant, it's important to have the proper cheese nearby. I figured YOU of anyone would know this!!

At any rate...Runner. Check the lid for that reservoir and see what it says (BRAKE FLUID, COOLANT, etc.), or match color to color of leaked fluid to fluid in reservoirs. That way you won't have to taste test...lol

Drinking coolant is so 80's, try working at a nuclear power plant and being exposed to all that radiation. It can give one a "glowing" personality. IT is great being a human night light.

I don't think tasting a coolant is a good idea . I am afraid that might be addictive lol
So, what's next ? How do you like your Castrol EDGE ? Would you like to test it or "taste" it ? I mean how hard can it be ? lol
Ok, I better stop saying otherwise you would think I am from TOP Gear lol

open the hood, run the car 3-5 min, after the pressure is up in the hose you will see where the leak is coming from.

Thermo & others

Many thanks! It was exactly that, break in the coolant plastic container. The whole container needs replaced, as the small "stem' leading in/out broke and leaks--apparently that was teh original flaw on design side. It should be done by tommorrow. Would be nice if this was taken care of by Jaguar-but not to be

You and a million others have had this fixed or replaced it themselves..

I paid $131.00 for my new coolant expansion reservoir tank.

Can I get a Castol Edge on the bolts in a glass with a squeeze of lemon. It is so yummy that way. LMAO.

runner, you are welcome. We see this periodically. It was just your turn this time. Enjoy your kitty and make sure you scratch her belly every now and then. It really makes her purr.
