So I recently got some H1 12v 100w HID bulbs for my x-type. They are just plug in and go and I was wondering if the car can handle the 100watts as it says that some models can not. thanks

I also bought some of those, with hopes of turning the headlights to a brighter white with that hint of blue. After a quite intricate headlight bulb switch I performed myself, they turned out great. But of course it was too good to be true-and sure enough they both blew out on a roadtrip one week later. Went back to stock bulbs so I don't have to go back in those headlights again. Sorry, but I wouldn't recommend it.

 

Hey there.....I did this very same thing a few years ago on my X type (02) changed all bulbs to 80w/100w Sportzblue by Ring.....great bright white light with a bluish tinge. They worked well for me on the X type for a year before I sold her, and I've had them in my Audi A6 for approx 2 years now no issues.

czar, I am assuming you are talking about 100W halogen bulbs, not 100W HID bulbs. I am not aware of anyone that makes 100W HID bulbs for an automobile. To add to that, they would not be "plug and play" as HID bulbs need a very specific ballast based on their wattage. Not to mention that the stock headlight system would not handle the starting power (around 100 amps, but would drop to around 18 amps once up and burning, would probably fuse the relay shut if not cook a wire).

As for 100W halogen bulbs, while the stock wiring will handle them, I would not recommend them for 3 reasons:

1) do you get pissed off when people drive passed you with their brights on? If so, then why would you do it to them but only worse since high beams are only 65W bulbs. Just saying.

2) while the stock wiring will handle the additional power, it does come at a consequence. The small gauge wiring is barely meant to handle 55W to each bulb. You start pulling 100 watts to each bulb, you run the chance of burning the insulation off of the wiring, which can then lead to other problems.

3) the stock headlight plug suffers damage from the stock 55W bulb. Now you are going to double that heat load. You are very likely to end up replacing the headlight plug every year, if not more often due to the plug failing, leading to your headlights not working.

Personally, I can not recommend running lights like that on a vehicle. You want them as your high beams for alone driving in the middle of the woods, great, by all means do that. But please have some consideration for other drivers on the road.

 

Those fake HID halogen bulbs with the blue-coating ALWAYS burn out or EXPLODE. Every modified civic with a teenage driver has these in town and you always see them a day later with one bulb burned out, or exploded inside the assembly. Some of them will melt your wiring as well. ESPECIALLY 100W as you described. Do yourself a favor, spend a little money.
It may be a 'cheap-Jaguar,' but it's still a 'Jaguar.' Use a true HID kit with proper ballasts and igniters.

And yes i wasn't talking about HID's, sorry they're halogen like you said.
Will try the HID since i see that's the best way. But i'm tempted to try since it worked out for jimc64.

 

Even if the bulbs would have lasted, you would have ended up putting out less lumens due to the blue tinting, which actually filters out usable visible light.

 

HIDs are almost free these days (some cheap sets are under $30 shipped). Even a 100w H1 will probably only put out 1500 lumens, or about half that of a 35w HID bulb. Save up and spend the extra $10 for real HIDs

 

+1 ^ I've heard great things about Philips HID kits. They are a little more expensive though. If you want bang for you buck, purchase your kit at DDM tuning. I think there a little over $35 plus shipping which is $11 I think... But check them out.

With fogs it is tricky. I ended up using 9006 HIDs and dremeling the tabs a little thinner to make them work. The factory fogs use an adapter on the H1 that makes them install like 9006's.

BTW - use 4300k, 5000k or 6000k color, based on your preference. I have 6000k in mine and they are livable, but a little too high schooler-ish blue for me. Anything >6000k is just stupid and you lose lighting performance rapidly the more purple you go. At 12000k, they are roughly equal in lumen output to good 55w halogens. 5000k is perfect in my opinion and exactly white, void of brown and blue.

 

okay just an update. I tried out the 100w halogens i got for 10 bucks, theyre OKAY. nothing major. But i did go ahead and bought the HID kit from DDM tuning. Got 2nd day air so i can put em on my X sooner :] And i just got the trunk spoiler i ordered earlier! good month for the X.

EDIT: i got the 5k kit.
