How can I disable the ABS?
My abs system is not working right and the ABS system disables itself after about 1/4 mile of driving. I am still trying to fix it but in the interim I would like to disable the ABS.
I have to take my car in for emissions testing. They probably wont test it if the abs is causing the brakes to behave erratically.
Is there a way I can disable the abs without putting the car into limp mode? I already tried removing the F13 fuse for ABS but that just puts the car in limp mode.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Gregg

You must be getting a light on the dash indicating a fault. Why not have the code read and then search on here? It might be an easy fix. Why not fix it and get your car working properly again ? Probably a wheel speed sensor or reluctor ring. Plenty of posts about that. I can't recall anyone on here disabling their ABS system intentionally. To do that might be way more complicated than to fix it properly. Bite the bullet and fix it to be done with it.
What kind of sloppy issue are you having with the brakes. You never really detailed just what your symptoms are. Knowing more about that would make it more likely someone on here could help.

Sloppy brakes are when the abs is activating even though it should not be activating. After about 1/4 mile the abs deactivates all on its own and the light on the dash illuminates. Every time I restart the car I have to go through this process until the abs deactivates itself.
I just want to deactivate the abs. I am not looking to fix the ABS right now.....I will do that later.
While I appreciate that everyone is willing to try and assist me in fixing the abs issue.........I only want to deactivate the ABS right now.

When the abs deactivates the only thing that happens is the dash ABS light comes on. (and of course the abs deactivates)
I am just trying to get state mandated emissions testing done before my temp tag runs out and I dont have time to mess with fixing the abs right now. They put it on a dyno and probably wont test it if the abs causes the chatter braking.

+1. The self test mode will detect a missing sensor.
If the ABS is activating randomly all on it's own the car probably shouldn't be on the road at all.

Looks like two distinct possibilities: a sensor is intermittent, likely shorting, or , more likely, the controller is failing.
Both are easy fixes, and you are risking your life just disabling it. The brakes will function with the ABS disabled, but not properly or reliably.
If you have an accident with defective a defective ABS system, plan on being dragged through court, too. The insurance companies don't hesitate to pull the codes these days, you've already given them permission, and they don't need a warrant.

Do the easy things first. Get the codes read, it will tell you what sensor is at fault (if any). If it does through up a code for one of the sensors, disconnect it and spray the connector with contact cleaner or wd40 then reconnect. It may fix it or it may not. At least it gives you a starting point.
If the ABS deactivated itself, why would you want to deactivate it? You know what the ABS being installed for? If you deactivate the ABS then you looking for the trouble. Even you only want to inspect for emission, but if they see the ABS light on they won't pass the inspection.
Than, this post is almost two years old and the original poster must have moved on as he has not posted anything on here since then.
I have noticed that you have posted on quite a number of very old posts that are several years old. Any reason why that is?
