Default How much oil will drain from TC?

Hey Guys, I'm about to drain the TC in my '02 X with manual gearbox. I'm gonna' jack the car up on its side about 2 feet and let the TC drain. I've read that this is the procedure of choice. How much lube should drain out assuming that the TC is full? I am aware that ALL of the lube will NOT drain out...so... I'm trying to determine how much to refill without overfilling. Thanks for everbody's time, Andy

There is supposed to be 550 ml of oil in there but everybody who has changed it has been surprised with what was actually there. Everybody that I have read on here have gotten nowhere close to that amount, especially on a 2002. I also have an 02 with 100,000 miles and I'm about to change my TC oil. I'm afraid of what I will find.

when filling the transfer case you really cant over fill it. If you do, it will eventually come out the vent, but fill it until you can't get anymore fluid in. you will also lose some fuel when putting the drain valve back on

I am changing mine right now as we speak and I only got 350ml out of mine and its a 2002 2.5L I also flushed it out 3 times with gear oil and engine flush. A lot of metalic crap is coming out but the fluid is getting lighter and lighter with every flush.

c.3823, when the transfer case is filled at the factory and is bone dry, they put 600ml of fluid in there. But, on the subsequent drain/fills, you will only get out about 550ml at best. It is recommended you add back in 550ml of fluid regardless of what you get out. As you can imagine, even a small leak over many miles will result in substantial fluid loss. Even so, if you over fill it, like was mentioned, it will come out the vent. Sure, you will get a slight stink from the fluid dripping on to the exhaust, but it is lots better than not having sufficient fluid in it later.

Any more questions, keep them coming.

Hello Guys, The TC has been draining for a little over 24 hours. It looks like about 325ml is all that its going to give up. The oil is old but not obscenely so. I'm going with Thermo's advice to put 550ml back in. If any oil leaks out through the vent.....well.....it'll just have to leak and the world will have to adjust. ANYWAY.....it's been my experience with Jags and Ford Model A's that if they did NOT leak it was because what ever was leaking had completely leaked out. Thanks to everybody who contributed their input. Cheers, Andy

Just an FYI, I removed the lower bearing housing (for repair). When I did, a good quantity of oil came out. And, I had removed the plug on the side of the TC. Sorry I don't know exactly how much. However, after re-assembly, I filled it with the proper amount. I've had no problems with leakage since.

So, my conclusion is that I had been overfilling the unit all this time. As it had been leaking profusely.

This is great to hear, however there are two things to consider about this advice. If you under-fill your TC then it will be destined for catastrophic failure very soon. If you over-fill, you just get leakage and a foul smell until it's at the right level. Just something to consider as most of us would rather be "safe than sorry."

I'll probably be changing the fluid soon.

Since it's no longer leaking, I'll try to measure the drained portion of the fluid.
