Default How to remove / replace 02 X-Type Shift Knob

Guys

Is there some trick to removing an 02 X-Type Shift Knob on the Manual Transmission? I just got a new knob (but it seems wrong - Shift Knob, Manual trans, Leather [Part#: C2S13208]), but in any case I need to replace my worn knob and shift boot (that is also on order).

Before I start this process I want to be sure there is no gotcha here that will leave me without a working shifter and wanting for some special tool I don't have. I would think it just screws off but ive seen other threads indicating its more complex than that.

thanks in advance

Welcome to the forum Homey,

It appears to simply unscrew anticlockwise:

Oh BTW

Do you know if I got the wrong part (shift knob) for this car? I got it from jaguarpartscheap web site and it said it was the right one but it seems to look wrong.

Is it oval rather than completely round? Post a photo?
There's some strangeness about the part numbers going on I fear.

That's...weird. It's like the shape is uspide down, I've never seen that kind before. At least it's perforated leather. What does it look like on the other side, there seems to be some sort of a temporary plastic protector plate?

I think it IS upside down. The plastic stuff is covering the place where the "face plate" should be. Gosh I feel silly. But at least it seems like the right part for those who need to find one like it. They should have included some instructions for newbies eh?

Im gonna try to put it on tomorrow to see that it fits.

We have 12 parking spots where I live, and some genius was tasked with labelling them. Guess what? We now have parking spots numbered 2-13 (nice as I was given spot number 1)! Apparently that very genius has now started working for Jaguar...

But it is interesting that this can even happen. I suppose the knob itself is hollow, with an insert that has the face plate on one end and the threaded hole on the other?

Postscript - for anyone who wants to replace their shift boot and knob in this car.

1. The shift knob is part#: C2S13208. I got it from http://www.partswebsite.com/jaguarpartscheap/oemparts/jaguar-130/C2S13208.html

2. The shift boot is from Redline, I got it here. X-Type2001-09: 1x shift boot, Black leather, Matching thread ( ). Jaguar X-Type 2001-09 shift boot - RedlineGoods leather shift boot store

Note, that Jaguar Parts Cheap sells the bezel, insert, and shift boot as one part with number C2S51570MWK. I think the Redline boot is higher quality leather but if I had to do it again I would pay for the full assembly from Jag.

3. The installation of the boot was really pretty hard. When I tried to staple the insert into the bezel it didn't work well (going through 2 pieces of plastic) so I wound up using pop rivets through holes I drilled to get it all together. Redline showed the installation here:

http://www.redlinegoods.com/XType0105install.php

Here is how it all came out:

Good luck and hope this helps someone who has this car!
