Found a new feature yesterday. When I pressed the lock button on the key fob the horn sounded twice and lights flashed. Turned out I had not fully closed the trunk/boot.

I didn't know until the a few days ago that my X has rain sensing wipers! This is the first car I've owned with them. As I was driving the rain started to really pound and I noticed the wipers start going faster! I was like wtf? Then later the rain subsided and they slowed down, I was like double wtf? I guess I hadn't noticed that the wiper control has an "Auto" setting. Definitely a pleasant surprise!

How do they work?
The technology behind rain-sensing wipers is not complicated. A small area of the front windshield glass (usually located on the outside of the vehicle, opposite the rear-view mirror) is monitored by an optical sensor. The sensor is designed to project harmless infrared light at the windshield at an angle and then read the amount of light that is reflected back. A clean windshield will reflect nearly all of the light back, while a wet or dirty windshield will cause the light to scatter. The optical sensor can determine the necessary frequency and speed of the windshield wipers by monitoring the amount of light reflected back into the sensor.

 

Be careful with the auto-wipers...

I have scratches in my windshield that are obviously from the wipers starting up when the windshield was dry and dragging road-grit across the glass.

For the first three years I've owned my X-Type I just left the wipers in auto. I regularly saw them sweep when there was not water on the windshield. It would regularly happen at dusk when the sensor obviously was confused by the lack of day light.

Not sure if anyone has noticed this, it's not really something it does, but it's cool, and I found it unique. On the fuel gauge, there is an arrow indicating which side your fuel door is on

 

I agree. The "Auto" setting for the wipers is only for when it is actually raining or even drizzling. They are designed to keep up with the ebb and flow during a rainy trip. I only click the control arm up to activate the wipers if it is actually raining. If not, I leave the lever arm in the off position. Wiper motor off..

Here's a feature I bet many of you don't know. Try putting your transmission in gear with the car completely off. It gets mad at you.

 

It will do that if one of your doors isn't closed as well.

 

Nope, it IS available on '05. I had to have it programmed by the dealer. I had it done about 2 months after I purchased the car in April of '05.

Regarding global open and close. When I got it done, I was informed that it can do either global open, or global close. You can choose.

I choose global close, as it is more important to me. Shut the car off, get out, walk away, hold the lock button for 3 seconds, everything closes and locks...fantastic!

 

Do you rotate them every 3000 miles? That helps extend the life of the tire (at least in my experience)

You may find this post i created useful. its a summary of the uk jag forum on the same topic which was 40 pages long. I summarised what I thoghyt was the most useful bits for the x type.

All x-type jags do this as long as you have 4 electric windows, if it does not work turn on ignition, press window down for 5-6 seconds then wind up for 5-6 seconds this resets the window, do this for all 4 windows then wind all 4 down and get out the car lock it with the key and press it and hold the lock... It should now wind up all the windows at once

 

My research on "global" window up is = European cars do indeed have this feature. U. S. Cars DO NOT and a Jag tech said the reason it is not SUPPOSED to be enabled here in the U.S. is that when the global window up is used it by passes the anti-trap relay on the windows. I have tried it on mine and it is indeed disabled.

 

One amazing thing even my Sovereign does not have is bulb failure indication. A friendly policeman pointed it out to me! Amazing because even low spec Brit cars have this feature.
Also if you lose power to the trunk/boot latch when it's closed. YOU ARE IN ALL SORTS OF TROUBLE. Especially Brit spec as we don't have the internal strap to open same from inside. "we don't tend to lock our kids in there"

 

So I found a post of "reportedly" how to enable global up for European cars. I tried it for mine and still a no go, although manually using the key by locking, releasing and then holding to lock position again, will now raise windows left open.
Similar to resetting the auto up function. The window buttons have 5 positions = 2+, auto up, 1+, up, 0, neutral, 1-, down, 2+, auto down. Instructions were hold up button in position 1+, to fully close window, wait 2 seconds, release button for 2 seconds, again lift button to 1+ position for 4-5 seconds (but not longer than 6 which automatically cuts out power to preserve motor).
This is SUPPOSED to enable global close on key fob by locking, releasing and then holding lock fob longer than 3 seconds.
