Default Ignition Switch Locked... Can't Start Car (2003 Jaguar X-Type)

Hi all,

I ran into the problem of not being able to start my 2003 Jaguar X-Type due to the ignition column "locking up" and not allowing the key to turn. The power steering is locked up and I am unable to "wiggle" the wheel around to start the car. I have read several posts that were able fix to this occurrence by fidgeting around with the wheel. The original keys are not worn and I have never run into this problem before. Based on the condition of the keys, I'm assuming the there's a fault in the mechanics of the ignition column. I took apart the steering column covers and tried to remove the ignition switch column but was unable to. I'm trying to avoid towing my car to a "certified" dealer and spend all sorts of money on something that could be avoided. Would anyone be able to provide advice / assistance to this case? I would appreciate it!

Best,
Kyle

Hi Dell,

Thank you for the quick response. The problem I have with this is I cannot turn the key into "position 1" where the auxiliary turns on. This is when you are able to access the pin and remove the cylinder. I believe I would have to somehow bypass that.

Are your wheels turned? If they are the steering wheel maybe putting pressure on the key. As it is trying to straighten it's self out.

Try turning the wheel one way or the other as you try to turn the key.

I took it to a discount tire to replace my tires. During the servicing the power steering locked up, not allowing much movement in the wheel. I was able to fidget around with the wheel and after about an hour of play I was able to get the car to run... Luckily because it was still on the lift... but upon parking it back at home, was unable to start again. I know most vehicles have some sort of a "dead bolt" or pin attached to the ignition switch that locks the steering column upon parking the vehicle if you yank the wheel. I removed the entire steering column and the upholstery leading to the gearbox to get a better look. If I can unlock the pin that locks the steering column up I would be able to start the vehicle and remove the ignition column to replace.

Have you tried lubricating the ignition switch (using a graphite based spray or powder)? Then inserting the key and removing without trying to turn it a few times. Then look to make sure the little cover just inside the key hole is closing. Then insert the key, wiggle the steering wheel side to side while GENTLY trying to turn ignition on and maybe using a second key if you have one.

Hi Dell,

I used compressed air and was able to turn the ignition over and remove the cylinder. I believe the cylinder is the problem, perhaps the tumblers in the barrel are worn because the keys seem to be in good condition. I've called around to locksmiths, but no one deals with the "high security" tibbed tipped keys anymore. The dealership said they would only be able to replace the barrel and it would take 6 months. So I'm in a pickle now trying to find someone who can service this part. Thanks for your help, I appreciate it!

Kyle

You can get the ignitions from forum sponsor SNG Barrett, as for tibbe key, I hesitate to believe in a large city like Detroit, there's not a locksmith that can cut a key.
