Exclamation Instrument cluster change

i am new to the x-type so my knowledge is minimal to zero. Having bought mine north of the border I purchased a US used instrument cluster to have mph as the main indicator on the speedometer, someone told me that you cannot just switch them out as the ecu will lock out the controls. Does not sound correct to me but hopefully someone can tell me if I can change them.

Thanks for any help given,

paul

Cluster needs to be programmed to (a minumum) of 2 keys by dealer software. Or if you have the keys from doner, that can work. Otherwise the PATS will lock you out of starting as I understand it.

Astromorg's post about doing this =You have to be very careful about changing over instrument panels or you will find yourself with one very immobilized car! The proper way to do it is to get the dealer/Jaguar independent to download the relevant program info from the original panel before removing it. Then fit the new panel and then the info that was downloaded must be reloaded. If you're going to do the actual changeover yourself, you'll have to do it in the dealer's forecourt after he does the download, then get him to upload!! Without following this procedure the car will just not start because the security system won't let it. Putting the old one back in at that point doesn't work either.

There is a method of putting in a new panel without downloading if the old one is competely electronically dead, including memory, but then the mileage reading will have been lost forever and the dealer will still have to reconfigure the new module to set the right parameters for your VIN, reset the security system, tell it what country you're in, etc.

Also some dealers are odd about even programming a used cluster (obvious $$$ reason).

changing inst cluster is easy, but you need the jlr software (sdd137), go to diags and select symptom for faulty inst cluster, then click on recommendations and select install new inst cluster.

you must have two keyfobs with transponders.

first it deletes all keys ( no going back after this)

then adds key 1 followed by key 2

job done takes about 30 mins

the engine ecu and inst cluster form the main parts of the security system, the mileage on the old inst cluster is not copied across so you will end up with the milage of the new inst cluster.

Also petrol and diesel clusters are not interchange able

Good luck with that. What can be done in the u.k. Is not the same in the us. Also i would never even attempt a used module. There arer too many issues. And with xtype packs they work fine but somewhere along the line loose the ability to correctly program new keys like when someone wants to add a key. It deletes all then wont program new or old keys and needs a new instrument pack becomeing a expensive repair.
And to add insult to injury many of us dealers no longer have functioning comms devices like mongoose or vcm. We have one working out of the 8 we used to have and theyre no longer avail. Also jaguar land rover no longer supports software on older no longer produced models. Which always worries me since i have older jaguars. But technology marches on older stuff falls by the wayside

I believe the ability for changing from kilometer to miles is already in the capability of the existing cluster. I will take a look at the references and get back to you but I think it can be changed in the engineering diagnostic mode without dealer software. You may want to research that also.

OK so the research shows it can be changed but the problem is it requires dealer level software. My recommendation would be to talk with a couple INDIE Jaguar shops and find one that can do it. It is a configuration setting and can be changed.

Your best bet would be to talk to a speedo repair shop. They do have software to configure and program cars from most all makes. Guess who we call with key issues? A locksmith that has the software to goaround issues that even a dealer cannot because that abilty is not part of software sent to dealers from jaguar or land rover

Btw, an oddity when changing display language. I thought selecting British English over American English might affect m.p.g. = imperial vs.
BUT, it does not. I found that very odd and even posted a thread about it.
