Default Jaguar X type, 2.2D 2006, loud tapping noise + smoke.

Hi All

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Missus was driving the car round town, engine management light, oil light, battery light, and could light lit up, power steering failed and the car was bellowing out grey smoke.
She pulled over turned the car off and back on fault cleared, while driving back home the smoke came back but no lights on dash and no loss of power.
I got home started the car up and found grey smoke bellowing from the rear with black soot and a loud snapping / slapping sound when the engine is put under load.

I phoned a guy from jag, he came out, assessed the car and agreed something sounds horrible but couldnt find a fault, he suggested we take it for a test drive.
I pushed the car on this drive and it cleared the fault, everything back to normal, no more fault.
Drove the car for another 10 miles that evening, everything was fine.
Drove the car for 15 miles the next day and the faults came back, no engine lights or codes (checked with my obd reader) and full power with active power steering, however the horrible sound came back and the car bellowing smoke and soot again.
Took the car out for a run again, pushed it and the fault has cleared, for how long I'm not sure...
Parts checked.
Turbo - good condition, fins are good no oil in turbo or pipes surrounding.
Turbo actuator - looks brand new all soldered wires are in good condition no breaks.
Disconnected turbo and ran vehicle to see, still the horrible sound and smoke blowing.
Auxiliary belt - belt is in poor condition and needs replacing however there are no torn strips hanging off or excess damage to the belt (I'll replace this this weekend).
Vehicle is a 2006 Jaguar X type 2.2D with 150k miles, full service history 2 owner from new, last serviced 15k miles ago.

I'm not mechanic but any advice you can give will be greatly appreciated.
I have some videos of the fault, I cannot post them on here so I will add links to them as soon as I get a chance.

Thank you in advance.

Damo.

DPF? Pull your dip stick, see if it is unusually thin and smell it to see if it smells of fuel.

The oil looks normal and doesnt smell off or strange.
As far as I'm aware the car doesnt have a DPF however I could be wrong?

The DPF on the Jaguar X-Type is fitted to the centre part of the exhaust system with a differential pressure sensor to calculate the soot content inside the DPF and EGT (Exhaust Gas Temperature) sensors to calculate the temperature within the Diesel Particulate Filter.

Thank you Dell, however I believe my fault is different than the thread you posted?
My fault is intermittent (happened 2x in 50 miles)
And it doesnt make a sound when idling only when under load?
I've tried pin pointing the location of the sound, unsuccessfully.
Now the fault is gone again.. I just have to wait for it to reappear I guess.

Thank you though, I do appreciate your help!!

Okay do I dropped this into the local garage, left it with them for a week, they performed the computer plug in tests (no fault found), they test drove it, and left it running for several hours on several days ... no fault found.
They provided me the print out documentation, and didnt charge me as they cant see a fault.
Drove the vehicle home (10 miles) no fault.
Started the vehicle today to take a load to the scrap yard, smoke and tapping again.. no fault code or engine management lights.
I changed the front n/s shock and front brakes today then took it for a test drive ... no tapping or smoke but limited on power ?
This seems to point to Turbo ? However no fault with the turbo itself ...
Anymore ideas ?

I will be changing the o/s shock when I can get the pincher bolt to move ..
