Default LCD lights not illuminating when headlights turned off

I have a 2006 Jaguar X-Type 2.2 SE diesel. At night the LCD screen for odometer etc and temp outside illuminates, but during the day when lights are off its dim and can just read the screens. Any ideas what may be wrong?

Check the settings for day, auto, night. If mine is on night (quite a bit darker) I can't see it during the day. Conversely, day setting at night is quite distracting with the brightness particularly in very dark area/road areas.

Have had a look at that Dell but that only affects lighting on large sat nav screen. It’s the 2 smaller LCD screens that won’t illuminate in the daytime (one under speedometer the other under large screen)

Went out a fiddled with mine, nothing I do affects the actual contrast of the 2 screens. Lights off or on, the same. Only thing I noticed was the led lights on a/c & automatic climate (red) & defroster (green) dim slightly if I turn lights on. Backlighting on dash, etc. obviously is controlled by the dimmer switch on light switch but, does not change lcd contrast on either screen. This is a puzzler, nothing in search about anyone having this problem on a X. There were some on another model where the dealer has replaced a module affecting the LCD screens.

Yes the dimmer affects the overall lighting of instrument panel. Can make Speedo and rev counter lighter and darker.

In bright daylight and angle of the sun does make my lcd's hard to read. I think yours are fine, just the same as they all are. I know driving at times, I can't read the outside temp and have asked my passenger to read it. It's just brightness and angle. Glad I have NAV so time is never difficult to see.

Nope, as I said above (post #6). I went out and fiddled with everything and with lights off, there was no change in contrast of the LCD displays I could find.

Yes, it pretty much is what it is. It is backlit when the lights are on, but that is it. During the day it is just the green and black contract with no additional lighting. Pretty readable in most situations as I recall. You have to remember, too, that is basically 20 + year old technology there. Displays have come a long way since that time.
