LCD screen
Dear users,
I fall in love eith this car and I am planning to buy one soon. ATM I am trying to figure out the combination that would fit me best.
One thing I cannot really find information about: the LCD screen. Some cars have it, some dont. Is it anything worth to keep an eye for? Is it useful? Is it sensible, does it cause problems? Is it possible to install one into a car that did not have it originally? are the GPS maps updated?
many thanls for any help

The LCD screen is the GPS unit. If the car has a LCD screen then it has GPS. No, the maps are no longer
updated. The last US update was in about 2007. I have had 3 X-types. The first had the GPS the last two
did not. I moved the original GPS unit from the first car to the second and then to the third. It is quite a long
and involved process to take a GPS out of one car and install it in another but ultimately successful. My 15
year old GPS unit is still working perfectly.
One thing to consider, if you have the LCD screen it also controls the radio, heater, A/C, and other stuff.
If it fails then you can't control any of that. I have never had a problem.
We put 200,000 miles on our first X-Type, 159,000 on our second, and are currently 90,000 on our third. It has
been a great car for the past 15 years.

thank you so much for your very useful answer!
In such case, is it enough to remove the climate control unit and replace it with the touchscreen or are there other parts that must be bought and built in? Such as the antenna for example? What about the cables and connectors? Is there anything that must be bought separately?

There are a lot of additional parts that must be changed aside from the LCD screen.
There is the CD player in the trunk that holds the map CD. There is the GPS antenna
that is under the rear window. There additional are wires that run from the trunk to
the dash. There is an additional fiber optic cable needed. There is the heater and
A/C control module under the dash on the right side.
This subject has been discussed in great detail in the past. I did it while having
both cars. Then if I forgot a part I could get it from the donor car.

Last map update was 2012. Quite a few X owners are now doing Android conversions to get a better NAV now as well as media availability and in some cases bluetooth. A member here has quite a few posts on conversions. Just do a search for posts by Dennis Black at the search tab on home screen. Conversion is MUCH more cost effective than trying to put a stock NAV into a car without one. I have NAV and find it less useful each year with the maps getting outdated from the immense growth in the area.

Dear Jagger and Dell Gailey,
Thank you both for your answers. So installing a NAV into a car that did not have it would cost a lot of money for an uneffective, outdated system. So having or not having the screen would not be a point for me to look for when decideng which car to buy.
I'll check this Android thing when I get there. Many thanks.
