So i was driving...and all of a sudden the Powertrain indicatior light came on...then the Engine light came on...so I was able to drive the car home at max speed of 25MPH....which i think enters into a Limp Home mode as the Owner manual says. How bad can this problem be besides the fact I can't drive the car anywhere now till I figure out what went wrong? [&o]

I dont have a code reader...so Im asking my buddy that sold it to me to see if he has one. I went to go back out the Jag right now to get the Mustang out...and it only light the Engine Light and the idle was back to normal...Im actually searching online right now about similar Limp problems and they say it can be the TBS...worse case...the tranny going bad. By buddy said he had just finished changing the Tranny old earlier this week.

 

If you mean Engine Light and ABS light then its normally a rear wheel speed sensor remedied by fitting a new outer CV joint.If its other lights then I dont know...

 

When it happen ealier...the Powertrain light came on and went into Limp mode idling at 1500RPMs....so i pulled over...turned off the car for a few seconds. Turned it back on...and the Powertrain and Engine light were both on....but now only the Engine light is lit when i turn on the car and the idle went back to normal...the tranny was shifting good..but when i pressed on the Accel. pedal it wouldn't do anything.

 

I understand. Detail is important. Its best to be as clear as possible.

I was driving aroudn 40 MPH...and I slowed down for a stop light...I was about to completely top when I felt sort of a clunk feeling on the vehicle.....I stopped and the Powertrain light lit up and my idle stayed at 1500RPMS. When I release the foot brake to accelerate....the Jag began to move slowly...as it got momentum it should shift gears and when I tried to accelerate...it wouldn't respond. So I parked on the curb and turn off the ignition completely....i waited about 10 seconds and started the car. The Powertrain light lit up right away so did the Engine light. I was not far from my home..so I headed back. It was still idling at 1500 and no response from the Accel pedal. I let the car slowly get momentum and as it did...i could feel the shifts....unfortunately the fastest it could go was 25MPH. Everytime i had to stop at a light...I had to get the momentum up all over again until i got home.

I parked the car and turned it off for about 30-45 minutes. Within this time frame...I began reading the Owners manual...and learn about the Limp Home mode and researched it online. Since I knew I wasn't going to drive the Jag to work tomorrow....I had to move the Jag to get the Mustang out..when I started the Jag up again...the idle was back to normal but the Engine light stayed lit. The Jag behaved normal from the time i moved it out and back into the driveway....and there it sits now. [>:]

I called my buddy that sold it to me so he can help me figure it out....I've only driven it for 3 days. Can't believe my luck.

 

So it was a bad transmission?

 

I've been thinking that I might need a new transmission. Although when my Jag Tech buddy came over to pull the codes from the car....he told me he retrieve a TB error and that I should replace it. He replaced the trans oil since the previous owner changed it with regular ATF. That didn't resolve the problem so im thinking im going to change the TB. Worse case I have to change the transmission. [&o] I still get the powertrain light and the limp mode and it only occurs when im getting off the freeway as I come to a stop. The only way to get over that is to let the car sit for like 45 min to 60 minutes. Then it drives ok...but its starting to frustrate me. I can't have it leaving me stranded when in business. I think I should start driving the Mustang again.

 

Ok, your first mistake was in replacing the trans fluid with regular ATF fluid. Jag doesn't take regular ATF fluid and using anything other than WSS-M2C922-A1 will destroy your transmission.

If your power train light is on and you didn't scan for codes, I wouldn't go and replace things just for the heck of it. If you have the money for a TB (350 at dealer) than you surely have 50 to have them hook up the scanner and tell you what’s wrong....will be easier and cheaper in the long run...and you won't be so frustrated..

 

I didn't replace it myself...my buddy that I bought it off from...he changed it with ATF before he sold it to me....so it only had that oil in there for about 1,000 miles. I had a Jag Tech refill with proper fluid.

Im not replacing things out of the blue....A Jag Tech buddy of mine scanned the codes and it said there was a TB error...he recommend me to change it.

Hey X2, can you find out what ATF fluid was used when your buddy replaced it with correct fluid? (if not the dealer's type)

 

What confirms limp mode ?....the amber light?...……if the amber light comes on after driving for 15 mins then goes off after further 15 mins ...goes off and stays off.....what is the usual reason?

There will inevitably be a m.i.l. With codes you can pull with an ELM OBD reader.

To help yourself much more, get the free workshop manual. Then study all the codes which mention limp/restricted mode.
