Limp mode, dash codes, cold weather Help!
This morning my o5 x type has a check engine light and is in limp mode (won't go over 3k rpm) I am taking it to the dealer tomorrow morning but I did pull the generic codes from the dashboard which are as follows:
E511
D900
9600
Could any of these indicate what the problem is, and if so are they bad enough to limp mode the car? Or are these codes virtually worthless?
Its been close to 0 degrees for the past 2 weeks so I'm thinking the cold
broke something.

E511 is DTC U2511 (PATS ECM invalid data)
D900 is DTC U1900 (Can Bus failure)
9600 is DTC B1600 (PATS failure, flash sequence 13, PATS ignition key transponder signal not received )
Based on these codes, I can only assume that your PATS module has lost power or it has suffered a failure, resulting in the module not being able to communicate with the CAN BUS, leading to the car throwing up these codes.

Dont go to the dealer yet
Did this just start with the cold wave?
Go to Autozone, Napa or Oriley to have the codes read I will bet they are 300, 301 302... 306 misfire.
This is usual x-type winter vacume leak bs
You have a misfire, blinking check engine light, a misfire that put it in limp mode.
Disconnecting the negative battery terminal will get rid or that red gear limp mode lamp

harryc, the PATS module is your security module. When you press a button on the key fob, the PATS module is what says that the key has the correct information and therefore can allow the action to occur. This module is also used when starting that car as the PATS module states to the ECM that the key being used is an authorized key for starting the car. The information in the PATS doesn't match with the key that is inserted, the start signal does not make it to the ECM and therefore to the starter.
If you want to learn more about this module, let me know. As for cost, the actual module is not that expensive, but you can add another $200 or so to have the dealership program it for you to accept the keys that you currently have.
