Cool melted socket on 2002 X type

my headlight went out , and little did I know it was gonna turn out to be such a pain .., I got the H1 bulb then proceeded to discover what must be one of the most un-thought out headlight designs ever... My bulb was melted in the socket so I cut the two wire pigtail and went to Autozone for new one. they don't make a two wire anymore.@%*&^%#@. Got the one wire socket , called dealer, he said to connect the ground somewhere on the assembly . My question is .., how and where. To anyone who can help : many, many thanks . My daughter uses the car for her college roadtrips every day and sometimes she gets back late . I am a little concerned for her safety. I have three in college so if I could avoid taking it to a dealer that would be nice.

nidesign101, you should have cut 2 wires, a black wire and another wire (green/black on the driver's side, green/orange on the passenger side). What I would recommend is you take the pig tail that you have and attach it to the green/black (or green/orange) wire and then attach it to the new bulb. Next, get yourself an insulated yellow female spade crimp connector from the local auto parts store and attach the spade connector to the black wire. Attach that to the other post of the headlight bulb.

I am sure you don't want to hear this, but do not try to do this with the headlight installed in the car. if you are lucky, you are just going to bust up a knuckle or two. Worst case, you can trash the supports for the headlight internals and then you are stuck getting a new headlight assembly. You will want to remove the front bumper (sounds intensive, but not that bad really, if you need assistance, let me know). Then you can remove the headlight assembly and work on it at a bench.

Common problem with x types . I did as the dealer said and connected the yellow wire to the bulb holder to earth it , also you can do this with out taking bumpers / battery holder off
You might graze a few knuckles but it can be done .
