Exclamation Multiple Codes, stuttering above 30 Mph

Hi all,

About 2 weeks ago I changed my upper rad hose and everything was going great until today. I got in the car today and noticed it seemed to be idling a little off than normal. I didn't think to much about it because it wasn't very noticeable but enough off but just enough to catch my ear. I drove a few miles up the road and it seemed to stutter just slightly. When I got back in my car to drive home it was idling much worse and when accelerating over 30 mph it stutters pretty bad.

The engine light at fist only blinked while accelerating but then stayed on.

I got home and checked all my hoses to make sure everything was tight. I have the ribbed hose but double checked that as well. Left the car running and tried to feel of rang air leaks. Could find any.

I break out the scanner and get p1111. So I clear that start the car again then run codes. The codes I get are

P0302- This seems to be related to bank two.
P1316- Seems to be related to a bad coil
P1796- TCM related code which I'm hoping is caused by the other two
P1000- Code indicating that its not cleared

I'm planning on getting the battery volts and amperage tested tomorrow as well as checking the coil and spark plug for bank two.

I'm just looking for any advice on this. If i'm heading in the right direction.

Thanks as always

Yagurete, I would first start with access the plug for the #2 cylinder and seeing if you have a little bit of oil around the coil. It is possible that a little bit of oil has built up around the plug and it is now grounding out, not allowing the cylinder to fire properly. I recently had the same issue and that is what mine turned out to be. I pulled the coil, removed the spark plug (found lots of oil on the end of the plug), cleaned the plug up, reinstalled everything and it has been good ever since.

You may want to check the top of the coil just to make sure that it is not cracking and what you are experiencing is a failing coil. If you want more info, let me know.

Thanks for the info Thermo, always appreciated.

I just finished checking the coil and spark plug. Well theres a lot of oil on the plug but the coil doesn't appear to have any cracking.

I cleaned the plug up and tested

I'm now getting only P0302 and P1314.

My next step is to switch the coil out with the one from cylinder 4 and see if the code moves.

Reading this post it looks like it could be the coil (as you suggested Thermo), plug or fuel injector.

I'm planing on changing all the plugs soon (now maybe sooner)

It looks like there is a lot of oil on the plug, so does that mean my valve cover gasket is shot? If so how difficult is that to change haven't seen any guides on this.

Its raining here now so this looks like it will have to wait till tomorrow to see if its the coil.

Cleared up enough for me switch the coil out.

I cleared the codes an ran after I switched the could from cylinder 2 with the one from cylinder 4. Now I get P0304 and 1316. So I will start my hunt for a new coil.

Yagurete, sounds like you have figured this one out. The coils are not too bad and once you get it replaced, should run like new again.

Well there's no way I could do it without this forum and the members help.
