He will never know because moron mechanic said "blown engine".
I bought Ford Expedition once for $1000. Funny thing I bought it from Ford service manager, it belonged to his son.
It had $5K book value. Problem was broken valve spring. I paid $3 for new one, installed it (2 hours job), that was it.
I guess dealer mechanic diagnosed it as "blown engine".

04 Again sorry to hear of your problems.
Have you had any luck finding out what happened?

Kind of had the same thing happen to me about 10 years ago with a Nissan I had. went over a big bump and there was a huge clunk/bang from the engine and oil everywhere. turned out to be the push rod from the piston going through my oil pan. had to get a new oil pan, piston and crank cost about $300 and a few weeks stripping and rebuilding the engine but all was good.
Let us know what you find. I know a lot of us on hear feel your pain and are willing to help any way we can.

Paul, was it 3.5? I replaced engine couple month ago because half of connecting rod was hitting cylinder wall and damaged it.
