Hi,
It's the bearing that has gone I was told by the chap I got the car from.he also told me that he had a go at taking the pulley off but he has knackered the thred on the shaft,so he thinks that it will be a new air con compressor

No reason why you cant use a shorter belt, but finding correct length will be the issue as well as how much the tensioner will work in reduced run from idler to crankshaft pulley
At the cost of a new belt you could probably find a compressor on ebay for 25 quid?
Bit more work but?
