Default Newbie says hello

Hi All , just bought a 3.0 auto with sport button , sat/nav .power mirrors etc , 77k and in lovely order , it has no issues apart from the rear parking sensors not working (getting 4 sec beep but are all ticking) and a slight whine at 40 mph but its four wheel drive and as its very slight i have no concerns , loving the car and am looking forward to many miles of jaguar ownership and am hooked!

Congrats on the new ride. Pay attention to that whine. If it gets louder as the temps get cooler, check out the thread for lubricating the prop shaft bearing (it worked for me). These babies can have their issues, but mine has never left me walking home.

Welcome to the forum muirtons,

X-Type looks great. Can't believe you found sunshine in Blairgowrie this year to take the pics!

Please post in the New Member Area - Intro a MUST section to introduce yourself and your X-Type to the rest of the members.

Yes welcome, the car looks nice.

WRT the whine, does it vary with speed or direction of the steering? Does it seem to be coming from the front, under you, or the rear?

In the ~40K mi I've owned my X-Type I've had to replace both front wheel bearings (one just last week) and the transfer case. Wheels bearing do wear out, the transfer case shouldn't.

But don't worry, if it is a wheel bearing the noise will become intolerable long before it is ready to fail catastrophically.

muirtons, odds are your whine is the centering bearing for the rear drive shaft. Get your hands on a grease gun with a needle attachment and give the centering bearing a good greasing. Then see what you have. If the whine continues, then odds are you have a wheel bearing that is starting to go. But, even those are not that bad to replace if you have some mechanical ability.

As for your rear parking sensors, from what you are describing, it sounds like your parking module is toast. You can either try putting a new unit in (if you have a friend with an X-Type too) or going to the recycler and getting a used unit to slap in there. THe parking unit is in the boot, next to the spare tire. Fairly easy to get to.

Oh Yeah. Welcome to the forums. You will find that we like to be friendly and helpful here. So, get your hands on a cup of Joe and enjoy. You will find tons of people from both sides of the pond here.

If you can't borrow a parking module, there's a number of specialist Jaguar breakers in the UK who should be able to supply a used replacement. The nearest to you is probably Eurojag at Darlington.
