Newbie with X-Type 3.0 Belt Problem
Hello. I bought my first Jaguar, an X-Type, on October 2014 & recently had the car looked into for random misfires/hesitation (mostly occurring on steep inclines). For weeks there wasn't much progress other than my mechanic saying he's still collecting data. I took the car back a few days ago with intent to bring it to the shop again in 2015.
Then today I took it for an oil change.
The technician noticed that one of my belts was off a small pulley near the front of the car. The tech thought that it was the timing belt but surely to goodness that wouldn't be on the exterior of the engine would it? What is this belt for & how important is it that I fix it? Should I avoid driving my car until it's fixed? Much appreciated.

That is your water pump pulley. That would not be wise to drive until it is fixed. Its a simple repair if you have a few tools. And will save yourself a bundle. I am sure I have one around here somewhere. Just need to find it. Pm me and I can walk you through it if you need help. If I have one I can ship it to you a lot cheaper then new. the part # for that is C2S43295
Good Luck!

Thank you for the reply. I'm not sure why I wasn't alerted when you made your post but you were right - it was the tensioner for the water pump. The bearing seized up and caused the pulley to melt. It was still hanging in there until today when it finally let loose.
I knew there was something wrong when the heat cut out and the temperature gauge went up to 7/8. Fortunately it was -6C today so I turned off the car, raised the hood, let the fan cool it off. Hopefully there wasn't any heat damage to the aluminium engine block.
I very much appreciate your offering, but I've already committed to ordering the part ($91 - not too bad in my books). It should arrive by Tuesday & having a local buddy install it for me.
Also found out that a mouse was making a home in on my engine!

I keep a few moth ***** right where he made his nest on mine. You might want to check your cabin filter for mice as well. Pull off the black shroud that is under the wipers and on the passengers side you will see a filter. Just pull the plastic push pins that hold it down and peek under it. If you need anything feel free to let me know. Thanks and Merry Christmas.

Water pump belt tensioner
Hello there,
I have the same problem, needing to replace the water pump belt tensioner on my 2002 X-Type. I ordered a new tensioner on Amazon.com for 52 bucks with free shipping. I understand that I will first need to remove the battery and battery container to gain access, but not so sure as to how to remove/install the tensioner itself. I researched the Internet and YouTube, with no success.
Can you or anyone advise me as to how to go about replacing the tensioner?
Help much appreciated . . .
Happy New Year!!!
Gary

belt
Peakster. I think you can replace the pulley without removing the whole tensioner , I would suspect the bearings in the pulley froze and the tensioner part is good, PS don't let that technician diagnose ANYTHING further. These cars don't have a timing belt they have a timing chain and it has never been a problem and your right it's behind many covers on the opposite end of the engine, you can see it through the oil filler cap hole. Just saying!
