Default Oil Sump Leak

Over the past two months, I've noticed an oil leak beneath the cat. I know, owning a real old one, that older Jags leak. My 2005 X-Type seems to be leaking from the pan gasket, but I have yet to track it down. Re-torquing the pan bolts may be a solution, and I know the difference between a newton-metre, fig-newton, and an olivia-newton-john, but is there a true ft/lb setting for these particular bolts? Should I just crank them tight?

Cheers,

Bruce

It's the oil pan gasket. Sorry, it's a $700-$800 job. Find a good jag guy. He'll need the car all day as you need to remove a lot of stuff including the transfer case to get to it.
Search this site. There are many posts referring to the infamous X-Type oil pan gasket.
Good luck.

Why all the mystery about your "trick". You have made a total of three posts on here all related to the oil pan gasket. If you really wanted to help why not just tell everyone here what you know? Why all the secrecy?

That would be one post now, because the other two were deleted for necro threading.

The infamous trick. The bracket for the transfer case gets in way of removing the pan bolt that it covers. You need to drill 3/4" hole thru it centered on the bolt. It is easy to do and you will not have to remove the transfer case etc. Using this method you just need to remove the exhaust pipe ( easy) and the pan comes out with a little juggling. To make it easy to reassemble you may need to file the slight protuberance off the right front corner of the pan. The modifications do not compromise the structural elements of the drive train.

Thumbs up sump trick

sorry bruce, just trying to make a boring topic more interesting. I dont blurt it out because if its done incorrectly, it causes damage. the basic upshot is to remove front diff mountig bolt obscuring the sump bolt in question, having first removed all necesary other components, exhaust etc. acuratly line up the bolt head and drill an access hole, the diameter of a quarter drive 13mm socket. be very careful not to go too far over into the casting, thus rupturing the oil component of the casting. remove this bolt first from the sump. should all go ok, its a simple wiggle to remove sump gasket. I have checked with an ex jag employee who states that the remaining two half sections of mounting are more than adequate to hold the forces of the drive train. I try to keep it quiet as you can gaurantee someone will get it wrong, and try to blame my advice! have succesfully used technique several times and have 100% success ratio. hope this is helpfull to you, but as i say, this is my disclaimer!! good luck amigo
