Cool Parting with 2005 X-Type wagon (165k miles)

After a long run we have decided it's time to part with my wife's 05 X-type wagon. Trouble is it is in need a of a lot of TLC probably starting with the transmission. We're in Orange County, CA. Posting for any thoughts and suggestions on how to (my wife's words) find it a good home that will take care of it. She is adamantly opposed junking it. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated as insurance alone is killing me. Confirmation that junking it is a good call very welcome as well.

We have 2 wagons I purchased over the past few years. Purchased first 2 years ago when it had 68K miles, now has 100K (06) and the other last summer with 51K.(05) Great winter cars and summer luxury clunkers. I paid around $5K out the door for each one.

(You may read/hear that the wagons are so rare, and they must be worth more, but the only buyers that want the wagons from a "unique rare vehicle" perspective is if the car has very low mileage. )

I have found through research, this forum, and other readings that X-types are reliable cars to about 180K +-20K miles. At this point, they start becoming money pits and more and more things start going wrong.
Therefore your car, with its ailing transmission has started the unreliable phase of its life.
Things that may help sell the car.
- Good service records.
- Can you show/prove that the suspension and shocks have been serviced/replaced.
- Headliner and sun roof working and in good shape.
- Seats don't look worn with cracks in the bolsters.
- What options does the wagon have? (Winter package? Heated seats?, navigation...)
- Does it have DSC?
- If the body and paint are in good condition.
- Are the headlights clear or frosted?
- Any rust on the car, and is the window trim for the back side windows good.

If you have the ability to swap the trans it would make the car more valuable to be purchased by someone in the general public.
If you sell as is, you will only attract car buyers that are looking for a "deal" where they believe they can fix or part it out it and make a profit.
Depending on the X-type market in your area, I'd guess you may only get $500 to $1200 if the trans is bad, and maybe up to $2K of there are enough good things about the car that a private party becomes interested and is willing to take on the car's problems.

Post some pictures, and I am sure we can further help you figure out what to do.
